AccessAbility Week is a reminder that building an inclusive society starts with the everyday choices we make, including how we create and share information.

Accessibility should not be an afterthought. It should be part of creating clear, inclusive communication from the start.

Day 2 of our Global Leadership Exchange (GLE) Match is well underway as our participants move from the Gerstein Meeting Room to the Gerstein Crisis Centre, continuing our collective dialogues on sustaining community-led systems change through resistance, resilience, and research.

Community-based organizations are not alternatives. They are essential leaders to ensuring meaningful engagement of persons with lived experiences diversely-located, addressing social, economic and political inequities, and co-creating and realizing all “care” systems are community-based and uphold human rights and social justice for all.

Today, Eviance is proud to be co-leading the Global Leadership Exchange (GLE) Match: "Not An Alternative: Fostering Culture Change and Centering the Strengths of Community-Based Organizations" in Toronto.

This two-day immersive knowledge exchange brings together global leaders, community-based organizations, and people with lived experiences of psychosocial disabilities (i.e. “mental health”) to deliberate, share knowledge, and collectively strategize around realizing and sustaining transformative systems change.

Day 1 is well underway and our participants are moving across Toronto, from Parkdale Activity Recreation Centre (PARC) to the Empowerment Council, centering collective lived experiences knowledges through intersectional dialogues to affect systems change with a vision – fostering human rights and social justice in community mental health resources and supports that is sustainable for all.

During climate emergencies, official alerts and public communications are often confusing, contradictory, or inaccessible for people with disabilities (Engelman, Booze, & Izquierdo, 2024; King & Gregg, 2021).

Access to clear, reliable information can be the difference between safety and harm.

People with disabilities experience significantly higher mortality rates during natural disasters and extreme weather events, with reduced access to critical supports during emergencies (Bell, Tabe, & Bell, 2020).

This is not accidental. It reflects systemic gaps in emergency planning and inclusive response systems.

Addressing climate risk without disability inclusion is incomplete.

The Spotlight on Women Entrepreneurs with Disabilities (SWED) Project Working Group came together recently for its second virtual meeting. The SWED Project is a systemic change initiative led by Eviance in partnership with New Power Labs and funded by Women and Gender Equality Canada.

More specifically, we are working to develop a data tool—a systemic intervention—that is both meaningful and sustainable, with the goal of enhancing knowledge of access and equitable inclusion within the continually evolving entrepreneurial ecosystem for women entrepreneurs with disabilities.

The SWED Project Working Group draws on the subject matter expertise of women entrepreneurs with disabilities from diverse locations, as well as insights from the broader entrepreneurial ecosystem. By working together and embracing an intersectional, human rights–based, and reflexive approach, we will pilot a draft data tool—the systemic intervention—designed to be both meaningful and sustainable, with a vision of increasing knowledge of access and equitable inclusion within the entrepreneurial ecosystem for women entrepreneurs with disabilities across diverse locations.

Today, we are pleased to announce another recipient of the Climate and Disability Community Action Grant: Surfrider Foundation Canada.

This grant supports community-based projects at the intersection of climate change and disability. Surfrider Foundation Canada will use the funding to identify accessibility barriers in shoreline cleanups and develop more inclusive events so people with disabilities can participate in protecting oceans, waves, and beaches.

In partnership with Untapped Accessibility, the project will co-create an accessible shoreline cleanup model that can be implemented across programs in British Columbia and shared more broadly.

This grant is part of the Canadian Disability & Climate Change Network and Strategy Project.
