Flood exposure is already being reflected in home insurance premiums. Higher-risk areas are seeing faster increases in insurance costs, even as home prices have fallen and mortgage rates have eased.

In light of the situation, the Canadian government released its Flood Risk Finder, a public source of data for flood hazard and risk. Users can search for the flood risk in their area to better prepare against the threat.

Manitoba is no stranger to flood risk and the stakes are only growing. The same financial pressures reshaping housing markets in Ontario are ones the building sector here needs to watch closely.

Resilient building practices aren't just good for the environment, they're becoming essential to the long-term value and insurability of our buildings.

Check your area's risk at the Government of Canada Flood Risk Finder: https://www.canada.ca/en/public-safety-canada/news/2026/04/government-of-canada-creates-platform-for-canada-wide-flood-risk-awareness-canadas-flood-risk-finder.html

Everyone at Sustainable Building Manitoba would like to thank all the amazing speakers who led sessions over the course of the past month, and to everyone who attended the Building Resilience Gathering: Embodied Carbon Edition. Only together is this kind of event successful!

This gathering has fostered the space for education, conversation, and idea-generation on Embodied Carbon. Conversations about alternative materials, embodied carbon tools, and industry-scale approaches are all helping to shape what the future of sustainable building looks like for Manitoba. Stay tuned to see all those presentations available on SBM’s YouTube.

Last week, the Building Resilience Gathering wrapped up with an in-person session at The King's Head Pub. Professionals from across the sector had the opportunity to comment on what is and what should be going on in Manitoba, with others who share their sustainable building values. Conversations focused around everything we’d learned during BRG 2026, and culminated in a discussion about what barriers exist to energy code compliance, deep energy retrofits, and more.

This event would not be possible without all the financial support SBM’s sponsors provide. Special shout out to the organizations that supported this event: Efficiency Manitoba, along with Assiniboine Credit Union and Manitoba Environmental Industries Association (MEIA).

See you next year, for BRG 2027!
