Good morning everyone,
Just a little introduction to our addition to our "Meet the Fabulous Felines of Feral Friends Sanctuary" segments.

Today we share our first update on one of our fabulous Adoptees. If you have an adoptee of Feral Friends Sanctuary and would like to send a update please message the page.

And now....here's Jake ❤️

"Meet Jake. Jake was a former resident at Erin's sanctuary. Jake was actually one of the apple box named kittens born at Erin's. We had recently lost our cat and were introduced to Erin and brought home Jake and Elwood (formerly Fuji and Gala) in January of 2023. Unfortunately, around his 8th month Elwood was diagnosed with Feline Leukemia, and we lost him shortly after. However Jake thrived and is doing very well, negative for Feleuk.

He is infatuated with television, talking to himself in mirrors, and Heavy Metal music. He currently shares space with his adopted brother Simon, and his two servants, Tracey and Kevin."

Thanks for the update Tracey and Kevin! Sounds like Jake has a wonderful life!

Meet the Fabulous Felines of Feral Friends Sanctuary - Segment #2

Aubrey ❤️

Beautiful Aubrey was born at one of Erin's 2 Winnipeg colonies in 2017.

In less than 6 months she had her first litter. For many years afterwards Aubrey kept busy having 1 litter after the other. She had a bad habit of moving her kittens once she knew Erin knew where they were. It was hard, but luckily Erin was able to save most of her babies. And with the help of a few different rescues, those kittens were able to find loving families.

It was a vicious circle, the hard life of a street cat.

But Aubrey was one of the lucky ones. She had Erin.

Erin provided her with food, water, shelter and love. She also had the love of her life, the ever so handsome Mr. Crumb. They were a constant couple, loving parents and eventually they allowed Erin to pet them. Progress indeed.

But, as we know, life on the streets is hard and dangerous for both cats and people. The Winnipeg colonies were increasingly becoming too dangerous for Erin's safety. The decision was made to pull out of those areas, but not without the cats. That meant Audrey's days as a free-roaming baby maker were coming to a end.

After many attempts, Aubrey was successfully trapped with her last litter in 2020. She was the last female cat trapped at the Viterra colony. Sadly, her removal from the colony resulted in the disappearance of Mr Crumb. He went off in search of Aubrey, or another girl cat, never to be seen at either Winnipeg colony again.

After Aubrey's spay it became apparent that she was not a happy indoor cat candidate and plans were made to relocate her, along with Fiona, to the newly established relocated colony. So on September 7, 2020 the 2 cats joined Dot at their new forever home.

Today Aubrey lives a peaceful country life with her 2 housemates. She loves to sit up high and watch food lady do her thing. She has 24/7 access to their fully enclosed catio were she can enjoy the sunshine and watch the neighbor cats in their catio and the visiting wildlife. She has numerous insulated shelters in her insulated house plus many soft, cozy beds and never empty food and fresh water bowls.

She has blossomed. We know that with everyone's support she'll continue to have a happy, well loved life.

Happy St. Paddy’s Day 🍀😸

Today, on Saint Gertrude of Nivelles’ feast day, we celebrate a quiet protector of the most misunderstood and overlooked souls… our cats.
Saint Gertrude is known as the patron saint of cats, travelers, and those in need of comfort. It’s said that she watched over both people and animals, offering kindness where it was needed most—especially to the small, the unwanted, and the forgotten.
If she were here today, I think she’d be sitting beside the scared feral, the sick kitten, the ones the world looks past… reminding them they matter.
And maybe that’s what rescue really is—being a little bit like Gertrude.
Showing up.
Loving anyway.
Caring for the ones no one else will.
So tonight, hug your kitties a little closer—especially the shy ones, the broken ones, the ones still learning to trust. They are so worthy of love.
And if you’re out there feeding a feral colony, trapping to help, or opening your home to one who needed a chance… know this: you are doing sacred work.

Today was Richards appointment at the vets, as he had been losing weight.
He has stomatitis, and had all of his teeth removed last year, and that helped immensely....but now, he wasn't eating as much as we were used to and he was definitely thinner.
A weight check at the vet showed he has lost over 1 kilo since his last visit.
A check of his gums was surprising, as they looked good.
So if it wasn't his mouth, what was the issue?
2 plans were discussed :
1 - blood is drawn to check his thyroid, check for pancreas issues, etc.
2 - sedate him to get a better look at his mouth, and draw blood at the same time, and trim his nails
We chose #2.
Richard was left at the vets, and we would come back after all the tests were complete.
We figured Richard may be having thyroid issues, and he would go home with meds.
About 30 minutes later, I got the call. 😭
Upon sedating Richard, the vet was able to look deep inside his mouth and throat.
He had a bloody, cauliflower shaped tumor partially obstructing his esophagus.
And it was inoperable and untreatable.
Richard could not breathe or swallow well with that growth, and it was going to obstruct his breathing as well as it grew.
The decision was made......the best thing we could do for Richard was to say goodbye.
This was so unexpected and so unfair, and we are pretty much feeling emotionally crushed right now.
There are no more words to describe how sad we are.
RIP Sweet Richard.
We weren't ready for this.

Meet the Fabulous Felines of Feral Friends Sanctuary

#1 Richard ❤️

Richard showed up as an adult stray in Erin's yard in 2012.

He was trapped, vetted and when no owner was found, he moved inside. Being a "friendly" it was assumed he was most likely an abandoned pet.

Even though he was much loved by Erin, inside life was not always easy for Richard. He would door dash, bully some of the other cats and soon his stress caused him to have inappropriate litter box habits. He was not a happy camper.

Then, in spring of 2023 life for Richard changed. A idea, that had long been a dream, was in the planning stage. Funds were raised, insulated sheds were purchased and catios were built.

When the big day arrived, Richard and 9 other street cats were moved to their new permanent home in the country. There they joined 10 other street cats that had moved earlier into 2 houses of their own.

Although not a feral like the others, the decision to include Richard in this move was based on his stress. And he thrived! Freedom to go outside as he pleased made him so happy, and he made many friends. Most notable was his bromance with Scaredy. They were 2 peas in a pod.

Summer of 2025 brought another change. His caretaker noted that Richard was losing weight and a vet visit confirmed that he had Stomatitis. Stomatitis is a painful, severe inflammation of the mouth's mucous membranes. Full mouth tooth extraction was his best chance, so on August 13th, Richard became toothless.

After he had time to heal, Richard happily went back to his friends who had missed him. All was well until the cold of winter came. It was then decided, because of his age, he would move in to his caretaker's home. Old age has mellowed Richard and he has spent the winter living peacefully with his caretaker and her cats.

Recently he has started showing signs of drooling and has again started losing weight. Flare-ups in Stomatitis is not uncommon. It is a lifelong condition that often needs changes in medication to ensure a pain free life. So Richard will be going back to the vet tomorrow. We are hopeful that an adjustment to his meds will have him feeling much better soon. We very much want him happy and as healthy as can be.

Thanks to everyone for your support, it allows us to give cats like Richard the love and care they have always deserved.
