The WYO is comprised of three distinct orchestras allowing youth of varying age and skill level to participate:

Youth Strings:
Conducted by Keith Dyrda, this beginner level string orchestra introduces young violinists, violists, cellists and bassists to the basics of orchestral playing. One of the many highlights Youth Strings members can look forward to is a weekend at camp where orchestral skills and friendships are formed. Youth Concert Orchestra:
Conducted by Andrea Bell, this intermediate level orchestra incorporates strings, brass, winds and percussion allowing its members to further their orchestral training. Youth Symphony Orchestra:
Conducted by Andrea Bell, this full symphonic orchestra brings talented musicians together and lets them appreciate and be inspired by advanced orchestral music.

Another wonderful event coming up on November 29, 2026, featuring musicians of Winnipeg Youth Symphony! This collaborative event is curated by Vic Pankratz, taking place at the Crescent Arts Centre (150 Wardlaw Ave) on Sunday, November 29, 2026 at 3PM.
This event is FREE! Concert attendees are asked to bring canned food items to be donated to the Winnipeg Harvest!

Musicians of YS and YCO attended the 2026 Fall intensive camp on October 2 & 3, 2026. We have had the pleasure of using the wonderful spaces at the Desautels Faculty of Music for the second year. The WYO would like to extend our thanks to all of our volunteers (U of M students and parents of musicians), clinicians, music directors, staff and board members for their time and energetic support throughout the camp.
Musicians were kept busy with sectionals and full rehearsals! It has been a great experience for many who'd attended this for the first time! This wouldn't have been possible without generous supports from our community.

For our October we have a picture of the Winnipeg Youth Orchestras in their early days (circa 1930s). Conductor PG Padwick was seen here with musicians of the High School Orchestra, performing one of their concerts in the magnificent Winnipeg Auditorium (now the proud home of the Archives of Manitoba). Winnipeg in the 1930s was a time with many challenges - the Great Depression being one of them. Young musicians pictured here are a fantastic embodiment of resilience, unity, and the quiet power of beauty in difficult times. Amidst the world's worries, music was their shining beacon of light and joy!

September 30, 2026 - is the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. Together, let us honor the children who never came home, the Survivors, and the families forever changed by residential schools. 🧡
As a youth orchestra, we know harmony comes when every voice is heard. Too many voices were silenced in our history. So, today, we choose to listen, to learn, and to remember.
Through music, we will continue to build bridges, share stories, and play with our hearts so that the chords of truth and reconciliation may echo for generations.

The WYO had a great 1st rehearsal of the 2026/27 season today!
Looking forward to all the great music that musicians will be sharing together this year! Come watch us perform our first concert of the year on December 7, 2026. Tickets to the Fall Fantasia Concert is on sale now!

The is excited to present its annual scholarship competition. WYO Musicians are invited to apply for the 2026-2027 Scholarship Competition, to be held on November 27th and 28th, 2026 at Grace Bible Church. Paid registration is required to participate. Deadline to register/apply is October 25, 2026.
All applicants must provide own pianist for the scholarship competition.
Winners of the competition will perform a solo of their choosing. Senior level scholarship winners will be performing their solo accompanied by musicians from the Youth Symphony Orchestra.
