It’s tick season again! Those nasty bites can have big consequences. Did you know Pharmacists are trained to assess tick bites and prescribe medication, if needed? The problem is, the provincial government won’t let them. It’s time Manitoba expanded the scope of practice of Pharmacists so you can access care when and where you need it.

Strep can strike any time. You probably know the symptoms and you just need someone trained to take a look at it and do the test. Pharmacists are trained to assess and prescribe (if necessary) for strep throat. In fact, they offer this kind of care in almost every other province. Manitoba is one of the very few that don’t. Why are Pharmacists in Saskatchewan and Ontario allowed to provide this care but not in Manitoba?

This past weekend, Pharmacists Manitoba attended Building Balaans, a national gathering hosted by the Indigenous Pharmacy Professionals of Canada Pharmacy Professionals of Canada. We are grateful for the invitation to attend, listen and learn. We left the symposium reflecting on how we, as pharmacy professionals and advocates, can continuously improve on how we provide culturally safe care for Indigenous communities.

Thank you to IPPC, the symposium organizers, speakers and Elders who shared their teachings. Thank you to the dancers and musicians who made the Métis kitchen party such an unforgettable evening!

We encourage you to follow the Indigenous Pharmacy Professionals of Canada Pharmacy Professionals of Canada to learn more about and support the meaningful work they are leading.

💉 More protection. More convenience. More access.

Pharmacists in Manitoba can now administer measles vaccines to children and youth ages 2 to 19.
That means families have another trusted, accessible option to help keep routine immunizations on track - close to home and often with flexible hours.

Whether you’re catching up on missed vaccines, preparing for travel, or checking if your child is fully protected, your pharmacist may be able to help.

Talk to your local pharmacist today about measles vaccine eligibility.

Manitoba declared a public health emergency weeks ago to combat the spread of HIV. Pharmacists are trained to provide patient-centric care, including awareness and use of pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP). The problem? The provincial government has not authorized Pharmacists to actually provide that kind of care. In the midst of a public health emergency, let’s work together to expedite the expanded scope of practice for Pharmacists so they can help Manitobans get the help they need – when and where they need it.

We are celebrating pharmacy with stories about the work teams are accomplishing to improve Manitobans' access to health care across the province. Today's feature, Pawandeep Sidhu, BScPharm, MBA, shares her experiences as an accessible and trusted community pharmacist.

Pawandeep believes that pharmacy in Manitoba has so much opportunity to support the healthcare system and our communities - the expertise already exists - it just needs to be activated!

She highlights that community pharmacy is the most accessible point of care for our communities. This allows us to build lasting relationships and support patients (and often their families) throughout their lifespan - not just in isolated moments of need.

If Team Canada played in the World Cup match and chose not to put all their players on the field, you’d scratch your head. But that’s exactly what Team Manitoba is doing in their battle to ensure everyone has access to primary care. Pharmacists are trained to provide primary care and can help the 130,000 Manitobans who don’t have access to care but the provincial government is keeping them on the bench. Meanwhile, every other province has put them in the game!
