The North Point Douglas Women's Centre is a community non-profit organization based in the North Point Douglas neighbourhood, which is part of Winnipeg's North End. Our Vision: A safe, healthy, vibrant community for women and families. NPDWC has served the North Point Douglas community since the early 2000’s, first as the North Point Douglas Project for Women based in Norquay School then moving to
our current building at 221 Austin St. Our work focuses on meeting women where they are at and walking alongside them through the successes and challenges in their lives. We offer a variety of programs and supports that respond to needs identified by the community. Our Drop-In is the first point of contact for participants – from there, they can access basic needs supports, resources and referrals, basic advocacy, and a safe space to relax, socialize, and build connections with their neighbours. In the evening, the Drop-In becomes our program space. NPDWC offers programs that cover topics like healing from interpersonal violence and abuse, community safety, family stability, grief, and social change. At the request of the women in the community, we also offer our services to men during limited hours and have a biweekly men’s sharing circle. We are a non-Indigenous organization, but we serve a majority-Indigenous population. As such, traditional Indigenous knowledge and ceremony is at the heart of what we do. Our Knowledge Keeper conducts ceremonies for community members and program participants, consults on the guiding principles of our work, hosts quarterly ceremonies to mark the changing of the seasons, gives spiritual support and guidance to community members, and much more. Our Traditional Helper/Counsellor uses the medicine wheel in her work and is a practitioner of the Seven Sacred Ways of Healing Trauma. Over the years, our services and staff team have grown alongside the community. We have reached a point where our current building is too small to continue that growth, and we are currently working toward securing a new space. The Women’s Centre continues to prioritize the safety, healing, and matriarchal leadership of the women of North Point Douglas, confident that the voices of our grandmothers, mothers, sisters and aunts will help restore the balance that has been lost through violence, racism and poverty.
