October is Women’s History Month in Canada — For the Congress of Black Women of Manitoba, this is also a time to recognize and honour the Black women whose leadership, mentorship, education, advocacy, and community contributions are helping to create a lasting legacy.

This year, we proudly celebrate Natalie Bell, Mrs. Marvin McLaren, and Dr. Deborah-Zita Somakoko, who were recognized among the 100 ABC Honorary Honourees for their outstanding contributions and for the living history they continue to make through their dedication to community and leadership.

Their stories remind us that history is not only found in the past — we are making history today. Through their work as leaders, mentors, educators, advocates, and role models, they are opening doors, uplifting others, and inspiring the next generation of Black women and girls to lead, serve, and make their own mark.

As we celebrate Women’s History Month, we honour their achievements and the many women whose contributions have strengthened our communities and enriched Canada.

Here’s to celebrating our history, honouring the women making history today, and continuing to build a more inclusive and equitable future together.

📢 RESEARCH STUDY: CONGRESS OF BLACK WOMEN OF MANITOBA: EXAMINING THE PAST, PRESENT, AND FUTURE.

A University of Manitoba research team is looking to speak with past and present members of the Congress of Black Women of Manitoba.

This project will document past, present, and emerging efforts made by Congress of Black Women of Manitoba board members, community members, volunteers and professionals towards anti-racism. The study explores the organizational and socio-cultural contexts they have had to navigate throughout the years to grow the organization and work on anti-racist interventions for Black women, families, and/or communities in Manitoba.

The goal of this study is to better understand the past anti-racist efforts made by Congress of Black Women of Manitoba over the years, highlight the work the organization is currently undertaking, and track emerging directions for the organization’s future work.

We’d love to hear about your motivations for joining the organization; the values that shape your involvement; key issues faced by the Black community; and how the organization engages in Black feminist and anti-racist work.
Join us for a focus group (60-90 minutes) or individual interview (30-45 minutes): participants will be compensated for $30 for their time and knowledge.

If you are interested in participating, please contact Seedi Abdulhamid via email at [email protected] or Dr. Batac at [email protected].

This study has received approval from the University of Manitoba Research Ethics Board (REB -0173).

Today, we honour Emancipation Day, commemorating the abolition of slavery across the British Empire on August 1, 1834.

As we reflect on the resilience, strength, and contributions of Black communities, we also recognize the lasting impacts of slavery and the importance of truth, education, healing, and justice.

Let this day remind us to celebrate the progress made while continuing the work toward equity and liberation for future generations.

🖤❤️💛💚Happy Emancipation Day!
