We are pleased to continue our Member Mondays series by highlighting three organizations dedicated to preserving, researching, and promoting Ukrainian heritage in Canada: the Shevchenko Scientific Society, the Ukrainian Canadian Foundation of Taras Shevchenko (TSF), and the Ukrainian Canadian Research & Documentation Centre (UCRDC).

Through research, education, cultural initiatives, and the preservation of Ukrainian history and heritage, these organizations help ensure that Ukrainian stories, knowledge, and traditions remain accessible to future generations.

This Thanksgiving, the Ukrainian Canadian Congress gives thanks for community — for the generations who built their lives in Canada while keeping Ukrainian heritage alive, for the volunteers and organizations who continue to serve, and for the Ukrainian newcomers who are bringing new energy and strength to our communities.

We are grateful for the friends, allies, and Canadians who stand with Ukraine, and we honour those who defend Ukraine from Russia’s genocidal war of aggression and fight for freedom and peace.

May this Thanksgiving be a time to gather with family and friends, reflect on the many reasons we have to be grateful, and look ahead with hope.

On October 7 a UCC delegation led by Lydia Migus, UCC Alberta Provincial Council President, and Andriy Lytvynets, UCC Edmonton President, and representatives from Ukrainian organizations in Edmonton met with the Honourable David McGuinty, Minister of National Defence, to brief the Minister on the UCC’s policy priorities on Canada’s support for Ukraine. We are grateful to Minister McGuinty for the engaging and productive discussion. As Russia escalates its barbaric attacks on Ukrainian civilians, Canada and allies need to increase military, economic and humanitarian support to Ukraine.

Today, we celebrate and thank the Ukrainian teachers across Canada who inspire, educate, and help keep our language, culture, history, and traditions alive.

From Ukrainian schools and classrooms to community programs and youth organizations, Ukrainian educators play an important role in connecting generations and helping young people understand and take pride in their Ukrainian heritage.

Our Member Mondays series this month has been spotlighting the Council of Ukrainian Credit Unions of Canada (CUCC) and the three Ukrainian credit unions it brings together: Ukrainian Credit Union Limited (UCU), BCU Financial (Buduchnist Credit Union), and Caisse Populaire Desjardins Ukrainienne de Montréal.

Last week, we featured BCU and explored its history and contributions to the Ukrainian Canadian community. This Monday, we are pleased to end with the last credit union: Caisse Populaire Desjardins Ukrainienne de Montréal.

Caisse Populaire Desjardins Ukrainienne de Montréal is deeply connected to Montréal’s Ukrainian Canadian community, providing sponsorships and financial support to youth organizations such as CYM and Plast, Ukrainian schools, Ukrainian churches, the Ukrainian festival in Montreal and other community events.

The Ukrainian Canadian Congress (UCC) expresses our deep condolences to the family and friends of Ken Krawetz, former deputy premier of Saskatchewan. Mr. Krawetz was 75 years old. A leader in the Ukrainian Canadian community, Mr. Krawetz served as a Member of the Saskatchewan Legislative Assembly and as a Cabinet Minister for many years.

For his many contributions to public service, in 2016, Mr. Krawetz received the Shevchenko Medal, the highest honour the Ukrainian Canadian Congress can bestow. We ask God to remember Mr. Krawetz’s family and friends during this difficult time. May His Memory Be Eternal. Вічная Пам’ять.

The Ukrainian Canadian Congress of Saskatchewan was saddened today to learn of the passing of Ken Krawetz.

On behalf of our Board of Directors, Staff and the Ukrainian community of Saskatchewan, we extend sincere condolences to his wife Gail Krawetz, the Krawetz family, their friends, and former colleagues.

As a dedicated public servant, former Deputy Premier of Saskatchewan, Honorary Consul of Ukraine to Saskatchewan, UCC Saskatchewan Nation Builder Award recipient and proud Ukrainian Canadian, Mr. Krawetz made significant contributions to our province, its people, and our Ukrainian Canadian community in particular, through many years of leadership and service.

One of his important legacy contributions was the shepherding of Bill 40 The Ukrainian Famine and Genocide (Holodomor) Memorial Day Act for adoption in 2008 by the Legislative Assembly of Saskatchewan, making Saskatchewan the first legislature in Canada to recognize the Holodomor as genocide.

We join Saskatchewan residents in mourning his loss and honouring his lasting legacy. Thank you, Ken!

On October 1, Ukraine and Ukrainians around the world mark the Day of the Defenders of Ukraine. We honour the brave Ukrainian patriots who through the centuries have fought for the freedom and independence of Ukraine.

Today, Russia wages a genocidal war of aggression against Ukraine, seeking to destroy the Ukrainian people and the Ukrainian state. Russia bombs Ukrainian cities and towns, murders women, children and the elderly. Russia tortures POWs and civilians. Russia has forcibly abducted over 20,000 Ukrainian children. These are crimes for which the world must hold Russia accountable.

Russia is escalating attacks on Europe – routinely violating NATO airspace. The Ukrainian people and the Ukrainian Armed Forces fight heroically defending Ukraine’s freedom – and the freedom of all Europe – from Russian despotism.

We call on Ukraine’s allies to provide Ukraine with the weapons and assistance Ukraine needs to defeat Russia. We call on Ukraine’s allies to increase sanctions and economic pressure on Russia.

On this Day of the Defenders of Ukraine, we honour the sacrifices of those who have fought and fight now for Ukraine’s freedom. We ask God to grant Ukraine victory.

On the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, the Ukrainian Canadian Congress honours the Survivors of residential schools, remembers the children who never returned home, and recognizes the enduring impacts of this painful history.

Today, we reflect on the importance of listening, learning, remembering, and acknowledging the experiences of Indigenous Peoples. Reconciliation is an ongoing responsibility—one that calls on all Canadians to help build a future grounded in respect, understanding, and meaningful action.
