We’re absolutely thrilled to welcome back Marcy Markusa of CBC Manitoba as our emcee for LITE’s 29th Annual Wild Blueberry Pancake Breakfast!

Marcy will once again bring her warmth, energy, and enthusiasm to one of Winnipeg’s most beloved community breakfast traditions, helping us celebrate the people, partnerships, and collective efforts that make stronger communities possible. And we can’t wait!

For 29 years, the Wild Blueberry Pancake Breakfast has brought Winnipeggers together over delicious food and a shared commitment to creating meaningful employment opportunities in our community. Sometimes the most personal writing begins with the people we carry with us. For Madison Yuzicipi, family, memory, and grief became part of what she chose to put into words. In her conversation for You Shine Today, Madison reflects on the emotions behind her writing, the people who shaped it, and the way poetry gave her space to express feelings that were difficult to hold onto alone.

One line from her work captures that beautifully: “I had to move away to feel closer to you.” There is a story behind that line, and a deeper reflection on grief, connection, and the way certain memories stay with us long after a moment has passed.

Madison’s interview is thoughtful, vulnerable, and deeply human. It invites readers to think about their own families, their own memories, and the people they continue to carry with them. There is power in being able to tell your own story, in your own words, and knowing that someone is willing to truly listen.

You Shine Today brings together the poetry and perspectives of Indigenous women, told in their own words and grounded in their own experiences. Across the collection, the contributors write about memory, identity, family, community, grief, resilience, tenderness, strength, and hope.

These are deeply personal stories, but they are also stories that speak to something larger: the importance of being seen, heard, and understood on your own terms.

With In Conversation: The Voices Behind You Shine Today, we are inviting readers to spend more time with the women behind the collection.

Through interviews, reflections, poetry readings, and personal stories, contributors share what inspired their writing, the experiences they chose to put into words, and what being part of this collection means to them.

At LITE, we believe stronger communities are built when people are given meaningful opportunities to participate, create, contribute, and be heard.

Community investment is not only about what we build. It is also about the relationships we strengthen, the voices we make room for, and the opportunities we create for people to share their knowledge, creativity, and experiences with others.

That is what this project represents.

It is an opportunity to listen with care. To recognize the women behind the words. To honour the experiences they have chosen to share. And to help ensure these stories continue to move beyond the page and into new communities, conversations, and connections.

We are so deeply grateful to the contributors who trusted this project with their words, and to the community partners and supporters who helped make You Shine Today possible.

What an incredible day of community, collaboration, and collective care. 💙

On September 18, LITE was proud to come together with CMWI and Welcome Place for another incredibly successful community cleanup, and the impact of the day could be seen everywhere. Volunteers worked side by side throughout the neighbourhood, filling bag after bag with garbage and debris, supporting one another, and showing what is possible when people come together with a shared commitment to their community.

Community cleanups are about so much more than picking up litter. They are about creating safer, more welcoming spaces, strengthening connections between neighbours, and reminding people that their surroundings matter and that they deserve to feel proud of the places they call home. Every filled bag represented time, effort, teamwork, and a collective investment in the wellbeing of the neighbourhood.

We are incredibly grateful to the volunteers, staff, and community members from CMWI and Welcome Place who brought so much energy and care to the day. Their participation made this event what it was, and seeing so many people working together was a powerful reminder that stronger communities are built through action, partnership, and people who are willing to show up for one another.

We were also thrilled to have CBC present to help shine a light on the work happening in the community and the people making it possible.

At LITE, this is what investing in community looks like: bringing people together, supporting meaningful partnerships, and creating opportunities for people to take part in building healthier, stronger, and more connected neighbourhoods. We are so thankful for another successful cleanup and already looking forward to the next one. 💙

On National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, we are reminded that truth is carried in people, in families, in communities, in memory, and in the stories that are passed from one generation to the next. You Shine Today: Poems for a New Spring brings together the voices of Indigenous women who have chosen to share pieces of their lives through poetry. Within these pages are memories, reflections, pain, humour, strength, tenderness, loss, love, resilience, and hope. Each poem is deeply personal, but together they create something larger: a space where Indigenous women are not spoken about, interpreted, or reduced to someone else’s version of their story. They are the storytellers.

There is something deeply important about that. Reconciliation requires more than acknowledgment. It requires listening, and listening means making room for people to speak in their own voices and trusting that their words are enough. These poems remind us that Indigenous experiences cannot be reduced to hardship alone. There is joy here. There is humour. There is creativity, connection, love, personality, memory, and the fullness of lives lived within community.

On this National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, LITE is honoured to recognize the women behind You Shine Today and the honesty, courage, vulnerability, humour, and creativity they have shared through this collection. Their words ask us not only to reflect on the truths of the past, but to remain present in the work of reconciliation now. That means continuing to listen after September 30, continuing to make space for Indigenous stories, knowledge, art, and lived experiences, and continuing to understand that reconciliation is not confined to one day of remembrance.

Today, we honour the voices within these pages, and we carry the responsibility to keep listening beyond today. 🧡

Today, on the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, we honour the children who never came home, the Survivors who did, and the families and communities who continue to carry the lasting impacts of Canada’s residential school system.

Justice Murray Sinclair reminded us, “There are no shortcuts. When it comes to Truth and Reconciliation, we are forced to go the distance.” Reconciliation cannot be reduced to one day of acknowledgement. It requires listening, learning, accountability and a continued commitment to meaningful action.

At LITE, we believe stronger communities are built through dignity, opportunity and respect for the histories and lived experiences people carry with them. That means continuing to make space for Indigenous voices, engaging with the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s 94 Calls to Action, and considering the responsibility each of us holds in advancing reconciliation.

In recognition of this important day, LITE’s offices are closed today.

There are no shortcuts. The work continues. Every Child Matters. 🧡
