I understand why safety became the obsession. Disability services have not always been good at keeping people alive.

People have died from neglect, abuse, restraint, choking, constipation, medication errors, and failures to provide basic healthcare. So yes, keeping people safe matters. Keeping people alive matters enormously.

But it cannot become the definition of good support. A person can be alive, physically healthy, taking the right medication, supervised, documented and protected from every imaginable risk and still barely have a life.

Survival should be the starting point, not the goal. The job is not simply to add years to people’s lives. It is to make sure there is life in those years.

For decades, Abilities Manitoba has been calling on the Manitoba government to fund disability support work properly. Fair wages for the people who support Manitobans with intellectual and developmental disabilities isn't a new ask. It's one we've been making for a long time.

It's good to see others joining that call. The Manitoba Government and General Employees' Union (MGEU) recently launched this campaign on the issue, and we welcome it!

If you care about this issue, we encourage you to go one step further: contact your MLA directly and tell them that the workers who make community living possible deserve wages that reflect the value of what they do.

Disability support workers provide a vital frontline service, but decades of government underfunding have led to a severe wage crisis. Right now, starting wages for many professionals sit between just $17.50 and $20 per hour.

With the rising cost of living, experienced workers simply cannot afford to stay in their jobs. We need to support more funding for disability support worker wages so these essential workers can support themselves and their families.

This short documentary comes out this week and we will be keeping our eyes open to watch The Fish Don't Care.

Jen Msumba, the main character says "They wildly underestimated me! I'm so strong!" Love that and can't wait to watch.

July is Disability Pride Month and to celebrate People First of Manitoba invites community members, allies, organizations, and elected officials to attend Disability Matters, a special Disability Pride Month celebration!
