Although spina bifida remains Canada’s most common physically disabling birth defect, rates have steadily declined in recent years – a direct result of advancements in understanding and education. Hydrocephalus is a condition where a person has abnormal accumulation of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) in the ventricles, or cavities, of the brain. This may cause increased intracranial pressure inside the
skull and progressive enlargement of the head, convulsion, and mental disability. This condition can occur as a result of head trauma, birth defect (such as Spina Bifida) and other spinal cord injuries and conditions The Spina Bifida and Hydrocephalus Association of Canada is the voice of people who live with these conditions. We are the source of support and advocacy, as well as the champions of research. Four out of every 1000 babies born in Canada are still affected by Spina Bifida. Because this permanently disabling condition develops early in pregnancy, often before the mother knows she is pregnant, awareness is vital. Diagnosis in cases of Hydrocephalus is often incorrect, due to lack of awareness. People such as the elderly are thought to have dementia, when in fact they have Normal Pressure Hydrocephalus. This is an extremely manageable and treatable condition if the doctor and the patient understand what they are dealing with.
