The Jewish Radio Hour - Sunday May 3/26
On the first segment of The Jewish Radio Hour, Rochelle Zucker features two groups from israel. First up is The Israel Klezmer Orchestra (IKO), a large traditional ensemble that performs Klezmer music - the legacy of the Jewish music of Eastern Europe, as it was performed hundreds of years ago. It was formed in Jerusalem in 2017 and is under the direction of band leader Gershon Leizerson a klezmer musician, violinist, singer, composer and teacher.
The spotlight then falls on Di Gasn Trio. (The Street Trio) - an Israeli band, chiefly influenced by music of the Balkan region and Klezmer music of Eastern Europe, blending additional elements of jazz, Arabic and classical music. (Although the group calls itself a trio. it now normally performs as a quartet. The group performs both traditional music and original compositions..

On the Yiddish half hour, Rochelle Introduces you to a new recording called Di Rayzes Fun Sofia (Sofia's Journeys). The artists - Ensemble Waks from Germany have taken bits from the old wax cylinder recordings that ethnomusicologist and folklorist Sofia Magid collected during her research travels through Volyn, Belarus, Ukraine, Azerbaijan and Karelia and have interwoven them with their own vocals and arrangements.
(The wax cylinder technology is old and quite primitive compared the recording options we have today. Therefore, the quality of the original clips is not that good. However, they add to the historical significance of the project.)

Jewish Radio is a Winnipeg Institution predating many of the others. It was started almost 80 years ago by Moshe Cantor, continued by Noah (Noyakh) Witman. After Witman's death, for almost 20 years, until his retirement in 2019, Sid Halpern served as Executive Producer. He was the "neshome" - the heart and soul of The Jewish Radio Hour. It was a labour of love. As well as hosting interesting and informative programs, he organized things and secured financing so we could continue. The show is hosted by a group of volunteers. We are not supported by The Jewish Federation but are an integral part of The Community keeping our rich culture and Heritage very much alive.
Listen to The Jewish Radio Hour from 1:30 - 2:30 PM CDT every Sunday in Winnipeg on CKJS 92.7 FM or live on the Internet at the same time on the CKJS website or using the iHeart radio App.
