The Health Sciences Graduate Students’ Association (HSGSA) was honoured to host Dr. Martin Hirst from the Michael Smith Laboratories, University of British Columbia, as our distinguished speaker for this year’s Dr. Patrick Choy Distinguished Lectureship held on October 17th.

Dr. Hirst delivered a truly inspiring talk titled:
“From Development to Disease: Advancing Precision Medicine through Epigenomics.”

As the Director of the Michael Smith Laboratories, Professor in the Department of Microbiology and Immunology, and Head of Epigenomics at Canada’s Michael Smith Genome Sciences Centre, Dr. Hirst shared groundbreaking insights into how epigenomic research is shaping the future of precision medicine.

His presence, deep knowledge, and engaging discussions with our graduate students were profoundly inspiring — sparking curiosity and meaningful dialogue not just during his lecture, but throughout our networking lunch session as well.

We were also deeply grateful to have Dr. Patrick Choy, and Dr. Soheila Karimi (Vice-Dean, Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies, University of Manitoba), join us for this special occasion.

Events like this remind us of the power of knowledge exchange, mentorship, and community in advancing health sciences research. Thank you to everyone who made this day so impactful!

📢 The HSGSA Executive Team is working on establishing a $25,000 Endowment Fund to support graduate student awards. This initiative ensures that unused HSGSA funds accrued from previous years will be put to use for the direct benefit of students. The fund will be invested through the University’s Investment Trust, and the interest generated will be used to create an annual student award.

Applications for the award will be reviewed by a committee composed of faculty and students who are not affiliated with the HSGSA, ensuring a fair and transparent selection process.

Before this moves forward, we want to hear from you. Please take a moment to cast your vote using the QR code on the poster.

Voting is open from today until October 10 at 5:00 PM.

If you have any additional thoughts, questions, or feedback about this initiative, please email [email protected].
