This spring, PFGA member Stoney Acre Farms planted 4,500 native trees across their field, a shelterbelt that will protect their crops, hold moisture in the soil, and shelter pollinators for decades to come.

🍎 Something sweet is on the way...

Berry season may be winding down, but our orchards are just getting started!

🍐 In the coming weeks, the trees at our Manitoba orchards will be heavy with fresh, sun-ripened fruit, apples, pears, plums and more, ready for picking and picking up. There’s something magical about orchard season. Cooler mornings, the crunch of the first apple, and rows of trees waiting to be explored with the whole family.

🍂 Keep your eyes on this page. We’ll share who’s open and what’s ripe as soon as the fruit is ready. Your fall fruit haul is closer than you think!

🌱 The season’s over... so the real work begins

When the last basket is picked, you might think our farmers finally put their feet up. Not quite! Post-season is one of the busiest, most important stretches of the whole year. Here’s what’s happening in the fields after you head home:

🍓 Renovating the beds, mowing back spent strawberry plants so they come back stronger next spring

🌱 let’s not forget all the weeding to keep the fields growing for next year

✂️ Pruning canes, cutting out the old raspberry growth to make room for next year’s fruit

🌾 Feeding the soil with compost and cover crops, so it’s healthy and ready to grow again

💧 There hasn’t been much rain since the beginning of July so growers are busy irrigating so those plants have lots of moisture going into the fall

🛷 In late fall, we will be tucking the plants in for winter with a cozy blanket of straw mulch Every one of these steps is a quiet promise to next season. It’s the reason those berries taste so sweet when you come back in the spring.

So the next time you enjoy fresh Manitoba fruit, remember: the work behind it never really stops. 💛

East of Winnipeg, the Regehr family turned a 120-year-old farm into a 48-acre labour of love, grown on bio-dynamic and regenerative principles.

Haskaps, strawberries, rhubarb, garden veggies, farm-fresh eggs, pasture-raised pork, herbs and flowers.

All raised with care for the land, the community, and everything in between.

We appreciate you more than words can say. And here’s the good news: the picking season is far from over.
