Juneteenth commemorates June 19, 1865, when enslaved African Americans in Texas gained freedom, marking a significant moment in the fight for liberty and equality. Today, Juneteenth is a celebration of Black history, culture, resilience, and achievement while also serving as a reminder of the ongoing work toward justice and inclusion. Join us in learning, reflecting, and honouring the contributions of Black communities in Winnipeg and around the world. Above is an event happening in the community welcome to all.

An important victory for evidence based collective action! But as noted, the province is not obligated to provide similar services in its jails.

A huge win for library workers, and for everyone who raised their voice to make it clear to national leadership that prison libraries matter.

Correctional Service Canada (CSC) has confirmed it will not move forward with the proposed budget cut that would have eliminated librarian positions in federal prisons — meaning the current library services model will remain in place.

This outcome reflects sustained advocacy from workers, community organizations, and people across the country who emphasized the essential role of prison libraries in literacy, learning, and rehabilitation.

It is a powerful reminder that collective action works, and that access to books, information, and education matter to Canadians.

While this is a major step forward for federal prison libraries, the work continues. Provincial and territorial facilities are still not required to provide library services. We remain committed to advocating for a future where all prisons have the support of funded, professionally staffed libraries.

We filled two rooms for this precedent setting report launch. It isn't just a report that can be ignored. It is the result of two human rights cases so the provincial government must take action. We need to make sure they do though!

We are appalled by the Hanover School Division’s motion directing that parents or legal guardians be treated as the primary decision-makers in student health matters and stating the “mature minor” category will not be honoured in division schools.

Let us be clear – this is a violation of children’s rights under the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child, which states that young people have the right to be part of decisions which impact them and they also have the right to share their opinions freely.

Mature minors are expressly named as decision makers under both The Health Care Directives Act and The Public Schools Act.

This motion should not be allowed to stand, and we urge the Department of Education and Early Childhood Learning to take swift action to protect young peoples’ rights in the Hanover School Division.

Removal Inventory - This is how Canada Border Services refers to people who have had their asylum claims denied. Why the dehumanizing language? Because that makes it easier to be less humane to them. Canada should not be smug about what is happening in the US given we just passed Bill C-12

Love knows no borders. Behind every migration story is often a parent willing to risk everything for the safety, future, and survival of their child.

Humanity becomes clearer when we look beyond politics and see the people at the heart of the journey.
