We're thrilled to welcome Kapanaise Thiebaut to the Manitoba Music team as Indigenous Music Communications & Admin Intern through the Canada Summer Jobs program! Kapanaise will be working with the Indigenous Music Development Program and the rest of our folks for May, June, and early July.
Kapanaise (they/she), is a proud Anishinaabe/Inuk Two Spirit person that hails from Long Plain First Nation in Treaty 1 as well as Nain, Labrador. In 2022, Kapanaise left the corporate world to pursue her passion of DJing as The Kaptain. She has shared stages with The Halluci Nation, Kiesza, Tanya Tagaq, Snotty Nose Rez Kids, and Boogey the Beat, to name a few. She has graced stages across Turtle Island including: festivals, conferences, weddings, and community events.
In 2024 and 2025 Kapanaise was a showcasing artist and delegate at The International Indigenous Music Summit, performing at the Opening Night Gala and speaking on panels such as The Art of Creating Safer Spaces and Indigenous Expressions: Beyond The Binary.
Off-stage, Kapanaise carefully ensures that her beliefs are intertwined with any work that she completes. This means having the Manitoba Harm Reduction Network or Go Ask Aunite (Ka Ni Kanichihk) set up a table with harm reduction supplies and tools at events she creates. She believes in community, culture, and harm reduction and her sets are a beautiful reminder of those beliefs. With any dancefloor, The Kaptain will ensure smooth sailing.
