June is National Indigenous History Month! This month (and every month), the Indigenous Music Office celebrates the First Nations, Métis and Inuit voices and stories that have shaped the cultural soundscape of Turtle Island since time immemorial and the future of sound.

As the days get warmer and festival season is just around the corner, we invite you to support Indigenous music creators and professionals in your Territory. National Indigenous History Month is so much more than reflection — it’s an opportunity to take action and support Indigenous music creators and professionals directly.

🎵Tag and share your favourite musicians in the comment section
🎤Share your favourite performance or festival memory
🎙️Attend a concert or festival this summer
🔊Support an Indigenous artist directly — buy merch and music!

To the Indigenous music creators and professionals working in the music industry: we continue to honour the foundation of the sounds that inspire you by supporting your journey. Music is Ceremony, Language and Connection. Music is the Living History, Culture and Spirit of our Lands.

Happy National Indigenous History Month!

We're thrilled to welcome Kapanaise Thiebaut to the Manitoba Music team as Indigenous Music Communications & Admin Intern through the Canada Summer Jobs program! Kapanaise will be working with the Indigenous Music Development Program and the rest of our folks for May, June, and early July.

Kapanaise (they/she), is a proud Anishinaabe/Inuk Two Spirit person that hails from Long Plain First Nation in Treaty 1 as well as Nain, Labrador. In 2022, Kapanaise left the corporate world to pursue her passion of DJing as The Kaptain. She has shared stages with The Halluci Nation, Kiesza, Tanya Tagaq, Snotty Nose Rez Kids, and Boogey the Beat, to name a few. She has graced stages across Turtle Island including: festivals, conferences, weddings, and community events.

In 2024 and 2025 Kapanaise was a showcasing artist and delegate at The International Indigenous Music Summit, performing at the Opening Night Gala and speaking on panels such as The Art of Creating Safer Spaces and Indigenous Expressions: Beyond The Binary.

Off-stage, Kapanaise carefully ensures that her beliefs are intertwined with any work that she completes. This means having the Manitoba Harm Reduction Network or Go Ask Aunite (Ka Ni Kanichihk) set up a table with harm reduction supplies and tools at events she creates. She believes in community, culture, and harm reduction and her sets are a beautiful reminder of those beliefs. With any dancefloor, The Kaptain will ensure smooth sailing.

We are deeply saddened by the tragic loss of composer and cellist Cris Derksen. Over the years, Cris has been an important part of many Indigenous Music Development Program projects. We are so grateful for Cris' time with us last year, sharing their music and invaluable insights with emerging Indigenous artists as a mentor at our inaugural Good Sounds music residency. We’re honoured to have known Cris and will continue celebrating their music and artistry. Sending love and light to all their loved ones and to all the music communities they touched.

The sākihiwē festival returns for its 17th edition this summer, sharing and celebrating Indigenous music and culture in Winnipeg's core and North End. Running June 25 - 28, this year's festival features many artists from Manitoba spanning the genres and several visiting artists performing at various venues and places in the city.

"We love helping Indigenous artists assemble or strengthen their toolkits so they can compete for performance opportunities on bigger stages," explains Festival Director Alan Greyeyes. "We envision a Canada that's safer for Indigenous people and the bigger stages provide pathways in that direction."
