Kobzar Book Award For the fostering of cultural development through the literary arts and creating opportunities for w Kobzar 2022marks the 9th awarding of $25,000 dollars.

The Shevchenko Foundation launched the biennial Kobzar Book Award at Hart House in Toronto on May 14, 2003. The prize recognizes outstanding contributions to Canadian literature through an author’s presentation of a Ukrainian Canadian theme with literary merit. The inaugural Kobzar Book Award Ceremony was held in March 2006 in Toronto.

In just weeks, we’ll gather to celebrate over a century of Ukrainian Canadian storytelling and the writers who continue to shape Canada’s literary landscape.

Presented biennially, the KOBZAR™ Book Award honours outstanding Canadian literary contributions connected to the Ukrainian Canadian experience.

Congratulations to Howard G. Buffet, Chairman and CEO, The Howard G. Buffet Foundation, on receiving the 2025 Journey for Truth Award from the Peterson Literary Fund! The foundation has donated $1.4 billion in humanitarian aid to Ukraine since the start of the full-scale invasion.

Our Story

The Shevchenko Foundation launched the biennial Kobzar Literary Award at Hart House in Toronto on May 14, 2003. The prize recognizes outstanding contributions to Canadian literature through an author’s presentation of a Ukrainian Canadian theme with literary merit. The inaugural Kobzar Literary Award Ceremony was held in March 2006 in Toronto. In 2018 the prize was renamed the Kobzar Book Award to better reflect the diverse genres of works submitted for award consideration.
