A beautiful day with families from the Immigrant and Refugee Community Organization of Manitoba (IRCOM) at Brokenhead Wetland Interpretive Trail and Patricia Beach.

The trip began with a walk through the wetland, where families spent time learning about the land, water, plants, and the connections that shape the Lake Winnipeg watershed.

After lunch, everyone headed to the beach for an afternoon, kids playing by the shoreline, families spending time together, and a lot of moments that reminded us why access to these spaces matters.

Thank you to IRCOM - Immigrant & Refugee Community Organization of Manitoba for joining us and helping bring families together for the day, to our volunteers, Paul and Mackenzie, for making the trip welcoming and smooth, and to The Winnipeg Foundation and Red River Co-op for supporting this work.

And thank you to AHPhotos for capturing the day so beautifully.

Water samples help tell the story of Lake Winnipeg.

Through community-based monitoring, data collected across the watershed helps identify phosphorus hotspots and guide evidence-based solutions.

More than 100 people wrote to Minister Moyes to call for action on phosphorus pollution from Winnipeg’s North End Water Pollution Control Centre.

Thank you to everyone who took the time to write, submit an appeal, and share this message with others. This response shows how many Manitobans care about Lake Winnipeg and want to see stronger action to protect it.

The appeal deadline has now passed, but the need for action has not.

We continue to call on Minister Moyes and the Province of Manitoba to require phosphorus compliance at the North End plant while long-term upgrades continue.

Lake Winnipeg cannot wait for more delays.

Lake Winnipeg means so much to so many of us, and it’s hard to see it like this.

Algal blooms are becoming a more visible part of the lake, driven by excess phosphorus.

The decisions being made right now will shape the future of our lake. And we hope it’s the right one.

This Earth Day, let’s do better.

Enough is enough.

Winnipeg’s North End sewage upgrade was supposed to be completed in 2014. It has now been pushed to 2032.

Meanwhile, phosphorus pollution continues, water bills keep rising, and the ferric chloride system already in place at the plant is still not being used to its full capacity.

Email Minister Moyes before April 19 to appeal the province’s decision to delay phosphorus compliance. www.lakewinnipegfoundation.org/take-action-winnipeg-sewage
