Happy Youth Voice Friday! This week’s Youth Member Spotlight features Mackaila Bruce-Tapley!
Mackaila Bruce-Tapley is a proud Red River Métis woman with deep community ties to St. Laurent, Manitoba. Her identity, teachings, and responsibilities as a Métis woman shape every aspect of who she is.
She is currently a third-year student in the Faculty of Science at the University of Manitoba, maintaining a 4.05 GPA. She is actively involved in Indigenous leadership programming, including the Paskwamostos Wawiyah Leadership Group (formerly Bison Circle) and the Bison Spirit Leadership Program.
She serves as an Indigenous Student Connector, supporting students as they navigate academic programs, campus resources, and cultural supports.
Beyond campus, Mackaila represents Métis youth as the Youth Representative for the Prairie Buffalo Local under the Manitoba Métis Federation. In this role, she helps plan youth programming, supports cultural revitalization initiatives, and ensures Métis youth voices are included in community decision-making. She also volunteers with Science Rendezvous, leading STEM outreach for youth and families, and participates in medical student panel interviews for Indigenous applicants, helping support pathways to greater Indigenous representation in healthcare.
Outside of her academic and community commitments, Mackaila values gardening, participates in CrossFit and loves spending time outdoors. As a proud Métis woman, she especially enjoys jigging, a practice that brings together both culture and community. These activities provide her with a strong sense of self, wellness, and connection to others.
Across all her roles and interests, Mackaila strives to uplift Indigenous youth, strengthen cultural identity, and advocate for safer, more accessible systems for Indigenous communities. Her cultural teachings and experiences continue to shape how she leads, serves, and grows as a young Indigenous woman.

Over four Tuesday sessions, beginning August 25th and ending on September 15th from 6-8 pm, you will learn to bead a beautiful flower pin! All supplies will be provided.

Ready to join us? Here’s what you need to know:

🌸 Open to youth ages 15 - 29.

Happy Friday! Here is a Fun Fact!

The colourful Métis sash (sayncheur flayshii) [san-chur-flay-she] was much more than a fashion statement. Traditionally worn around the waist, this handwoven sash was an essential tool for Métis voyageurs and hunters. Its strength and versatility meant it could be used as a belt, rope, sewing kit holder, towel, or even a first-aid sling in emergencies. Beyond its practical uses, the sash remains an important symbol of Métis identity, culture, and resilience that continues to be proudly worn today. ✨❤️
