“I needed this,” says Leidy García.

This one dignity kit, filled with soap, shampoo and toothpaste, helps support the mom of seven.

Without it, her family wouldn’t have access to these everyday essentials.

Thanks to the generosity of Canadian Lutherans and Canada’s International Development – Global Affairs Canada, families in remote Colombian communities — where access and affordability make basic hygiene products a daily struggle — are now receiving life-changing support through a CLWR and LWF project, including hygiene kits, dignity supplies and water filters.

For nearly 80 years, Canadian Lutheran World Relief has helped welcome refugees to Canada. Today, that work is becoming more challenging as families face longer waits and reduced opportunities for sponsorship.

In a new reflection, Jenn Ardon, who has spent 14 years working in refugee resettlement with CLWR, shares how changes to Canada’s refugee sponsorship system are creating longer waits for families seeking safety—and why people of faith are called to advocate for refugee rights.

As World Refugee Day approaches, we invite you to read, reflect and learn more about how you can be part of creating a more welcoming Canada.

Today is World Environment Day. Today and every day our partners on the ground are working to restore ecosystems and share practices that protect the land. Communities in places like Chad, Cameroon and Ethiopia are on the frontlines of the fight against climate change, they are fighting for their future, and we are proud to stand with them and support their work.

The next generation is already leading.

In communities around Lake Chad, Children and youth are facing an ecosystem that’s been neglected. One that’s struggling in the face of a climate crisis.

Through Eco Clubs, they are learning how to protect the world around them. They’re taking action and sharing that knowledge within their communities.

They are not just learning. They’re fighting for their own future.

The eco clubs are possible by support from Lutheran churches across Canada with funding from Canada’s International Development – Global Affairs Canada in partnership with The Lutheran World Federation.

“Thanks to this project, my son is healthy.”

Mauricio Parada lives in a remote Indigenous community in Colombia, where medical care can be up to eight hours away on foot.

When complications arose during his wife’s pregnancy, she and their unborn baby needed urgent medical care.

He said he knew he could count on CLWR and The Lutheran World Federation/ Federación Luterana Mundial Colombia y Venezuela.

Local project staff coordinated transportation, food and lodging support, ensuring his family was able to reach medical care in time.

Today, his wife and baby are healthy.

Because of the generosity of Canadian Lutherans and support from Canada’s International Development – Global Affairs Canada, families like Mauricio’s are receiving life-saving support when it matters most.

After fleeing Afghanistan, walking more than 50 kilometres to cross the border into Pakistan, Saeed spent years waiting for the chance to rebuild his life in safety.

That journey eventually brought him to Winnipeg through Canadian Lutheran World Relief’s refugee sponsorship program, in partnership with the North End Sponsorship Team (NEST) where a sponsorship group welcomed him like family.

Refugee sponsorship has been part of CLWR’s story since the aftermath of the Second World War and today, that legacy continues through people like Saeed.

Now rebuilding his life in Canada, Saeed hopes to one day sponsor refugees himself.
