Today, SERDC recognizes International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction and the importance of building safer, more resilient communities.

Guided by Gichi-aya’aag (Elders) and the strength of our people, we recognize that preparedness begins with Gaizhidaayeng (where we live), connection, and respect for the aki (land).

SERDC works alongside our member First Nations to strengthen emergency preparedness, reduce risks, and address hazards such as wildfires and floods. Through collaboration, planning, and community-led approaches, we aim to support our First Nations in protecting their people, lands, and critical infrastructure before, during, and after emergencies.

Together, we honour traditional knowledge, protect our communities and Mother Earth, and work toward a safer future.

SERDC Office Closure ⚠️

Our offices will be closed on Monday, October 12 to observe the Thanksgiving statutory holiday. We recognize that this day carries different histories and meanings, particularly for Indigenous peoples and communities. We hope this long weekend offers an opportunity to slow down, spend meaningful time with n'dinawemaaganug (relatives), and enjoy the moments that matter most.

Our offices will reopen for regular business hours on Tuesday, October 13, at 8:30 a.m.

Today, we wear ozaawijimin (orange) to ganwiike (remember), anamikaw (honour), and waasaabikide (reflect).

Ahead of the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation on September 30, our staff came together in orange to ganwiike, anamikaw, and waasaabikide. 🧡

We remember the children who were taken from their families and communities, honour Survivors, and recognize the lasting impacts of the residential school system on Indigenous peoples, families, and communities.

As we continue the work of truth and reconciliation, may we make space to listen, learn, reflect, and build meaningful relationships grounded in respect and understanding.

Brokenhead Ojibway Nation would like to proudly recognize and congratulate Selena Kern on her outstanding achievements in First Nations housing leadership and professional development!

Selena has successfully completed the First Nations Housing Professionals Association (FNHPA) Certification through the Manitoba Intensive Program, further strengthening her knowledge in First Nations housing management, governance, policy, accountability, and program delivery.

We are especially proud to share that Selena has been selected as Valedictorian for the Second Intake of the Manitoba Intensive Program! 🎓 She will graduate alongside 12 Manitoba Housing Professionals at the FNHPA National Housing Conference in Montreal on October 15, 2026.

Selena has also been acclaimed as the Manitoba Board Director for the FNHPA Board of Directors. In this role, she will bring her knowledge, experience, and passion to a national table of housing professionals while sharing Manitoba perspectives and contributing to stronger, sustainable housing programs for First Nations communities across Canada.

Today, SERDC recognizes FASD Awareness Day and stands with individuals, families, and Indigenous communities living with FASD.

FASD is a lifelong disability, and every person’s experience is unique. Awareness, understanding, and compassion matter.

Stigma can create barriers to accessing support, participating fully in community, and being understood. By challenging stigma and moving away from judgment and assumptions, we can create safer, more inclusive, and culturally supportive spaces for people with FASD and their families.

As Indigenous communities, we can draw on the strengths of culture, family, community, connection, and lived experience to support one another.

Let’s choose understanding over stigma, support over judgment, and compassion over assumptions.

September is FASD Awareness Month. Let’s keep the conversation going.

WHAT IS ORANGE SHIRT DAY?

As we prepare to honour the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation—also known as Orange Shirt Day—on September 30, the Southern Chiefs’ Organization (SCO) is sharing frequently asked questions throughout the month of September.

Today’s question is: What is Orange Shirt Day?

Answer: Orange Shirt Day is a grassroots movement. It raises awareness about the impacts of residential schools.

It takes place on September 30, which is now known as the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation.

This is a day to honour Survivors and their families, and to remember and commemorate the many children who did not return home from residential schools.

SCO is hosting the 6th Annual Orange Shirt Day Healing Walk and Pow Wow on September 30, 2026.

Attend the opening ceremony at 9:30 am at the Oodena Circle in The Forks in Winnipeg.

Afterwards, participants are invited to join a healing walk to the Canada Life Centre.
