CMWI is a Family Resource Centre in Winnipeg, Manitoba for newcomers and long-term residents to Winnipeg. Founded by a group of community-oriented Muslim immigrant women, the non-profit organization:
* provides clothing, household items, and food for newcomer families in need
* delivers health and wellness programs that focus on the mental & physical health needs of newcomer women and their fami
lies, including English conversation circles, Mom and Tot programs (activity-based and learn to read English), a female-only exercise class, support to parents, a men's sharing circle, outreach services, and other specialized settlement sector programming as needed
* provides a meeting place where all newcomer families can celebrate their culture & heritage
* offers Arabic, Somali and sometimes other language translation and interpretation services
* assists with cultural awareness, educational skills, professional development and employment
CMWI is the first organization of its kind in Manitoba where Muslim women were both the leaders and participants of their own organization. CMWI has grown to meet the needs of the growing refugee population in Winnipeg. The goal of the Institute is to promote and empower women and their families socially, economically and spiritually, within the spirit of Islamic principles. CMWI is run by an elected Board comprised of women of diverse cultures, ages and professions. To create a sense of community that supports and strengthens women and their families.
