[3/3] Meet the Washagamis Bay Knowledge Centre—a space envisioned and shaped by the community, led by Mason Cherry, a talented young designer whose journey in architecture began in the 2022 Design+Build Workshop. This design process didn’t impose ideas; it wove together storytelling, collaboration, and local knowledge to create something truly special.

The Knowledge Centre is more than a building—it’s a testament to the power of community. By celebrating local stories and aligning with Washagamis Bay’s cultural, historical, and environmental identity, the centre is now a multifaceted space that fosters connection and belonging!

[1/3] Last summer, our journey with Washagamis Bay First Nation reached an exciting new chapter as we began designing their Knowledge Centre!

In Phase 2, engagement sessions brought the community together to share their stories, needs, and priorities—laying the foundation for a Knowledge Centre and Community Workshop space that truly embodies their vision.

All summer, our open studio buzzed with creativity and collaboration, as participants contributed their voices and ideas, shaping the design in real-time. This vibrant process demonstrated the power of Spatial Agency—showing how communities can take charge of creating spaces that inspire connection, growth, and transformation.

Excited to share a key part of our latest work with ‘Greening Construction Trades in Canada – Faculty Training Modules’! Grey & Ivy contributed the “Indigenizing and Decolonizing” module, integrating Indigenous perspectives and sustainability into construction education. We also acted as consultants throughout the development of all the modules, ensuring an approach that honours Indigenous ways of knowing. This project goes beyond technical skills to address systemic barriers and advance Truth and Reconciliation in the trades.

Nothing a few popsicle sticks and great ideas can’t do! From a bird-watching shed to a bus shelter, the students came up with diverse ideas to make their school site more inclusive and accessible. They addressed social, cultural, economic, and environmental issues that matter to them while ensuring their designs were responsive to the site. The students also explored different technologies like 3D modeling, AI rendering, and virtual reality to enhance their design process. The projects highlight the power of imagination and innovation in shaping a better, more inclusive future.
