Introducing the Manitoba Food Recovery Network! A group of organizations who are making huge impacts in food recovery started meeting about a year ago thanks to our friend and partner Jennifer MacRae at Climate Change Connection Manitoba, who organized the first food recovery stakeholders group about a year ago. And now the movement is growing because we ALL agree collaboration over competition is what gets the work done, for the community, and the environment! Stay tuned!

Good morning Everyone! There was a post meant to advertise our fundraising hotdog cart, that has received some distressing comments from citizens who know nothing about our community driven Social Enterprise. To clarify, and I will start to post regularly on our socials as well, because the post in question made me realize how misunderstood being a non-profit social enterprise is:
1) CHU is a MB-Non Share Company (non-profit)
2) CHU is NOT a registered charity
3) CHU is a social enterprise, which means we do a for profit activity (citywide catering, and hot dog cart) to generate revenue. All profits fund our non-profit food security programs
4) We employ mostly (and as a priority), people with barriers to employment, to help them re-enter the workforce in a meaningful way
5) We hire youth, newcomers, and culinary students to create the next generation of culinary professionals.

Bottom line: ALL FOOD SOLD FROM THE CHU-BQ CART IS PURCHASED FROM OUR FOOD SERVICE SUPPLIERS LIKE GFS AND WINNIPEG OLD COUNTRY. THE SAME AS ANY CATERING THAT WE SELL, CITY WIDE AND UP TO 2 HOURS OUTSIDE THE CITY. ALL PURCHASED FOOD, SOLD AT AN AVERAGE RETAIL PRICE TO USE THE PROFIT TO FUND OUR PROGEAMS THAT FEED THIS CITY'S MOST VULNERABLE.

Did you know?

With five refrigerated shipping containers in place, Climate Change Connection along with the local food rescue network; is helping circulate nearly 200,000 pounds of surplus food each year, keeping good food out of landfills and on community tables. That food rescue effort reduces an estimated 218 tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions annually, the equivalent of taking about 47 cars off the road.

Already, this work has helped provide thousands of additional meals through partners like Community Helpers Unite, Brandon's Food Rescue Grocery Store and Neighbourhood Renewal Corporation with over 1,200 people accessing free groceries at Chalmers last week alone. Good food. Fewer emissions. Stronger communities. 💚
