Conservation Areas Initiative Protecting the beauty and resources of the Interlake for sustainable futures🌲

Our goal is to protect the health of the Interlake's thriving natural landscape so it can continue to provide sustainable economic opportunities and support our cherished lifestyles and cultures. This initiative is led by Fisher River Cree Nation, Peguis First Nation, Kinonjeoshtegon First Nation, in partnership with the Manitoba chapter of the Canadian Parks and Wilderness Society. This land means a lot to the people around here, it’s where we grew up and where we raise our children and grandchildren.

We’ve heard your feedback and your questions about what this initiative means for you and your communities.

This conservation areas initiative:

1. Will not affect your private or leased property, farmland, and/or cottages 🏡
2. Will protect the area from any new large scale industrial developments🏗️
3. Will not impact licensed hunting, fishing, trapping, or other activities like medicine gathering🎣

We began this initiative because we know we are not the only people who see the deep value of these lands and waters. We can all come together as neighbours to protect this region.

More of your questions are answered on our website at www.FRCNconservation.ca

The goal of this Conservation Areas Initiative is simple: protect the Interlake 🌾

Why? Because without planning for the future, the Interlake could be overdeveloped - piece by piece - until there are no natural areas left.

We want to ensure the lands and waters of the Fisher Bay region are protected for future generations. We want to protect nature, endangered species, and water health while encouraging sustainable economic growth and continued access to licensed hunting, fishing, and trapping.

The 3 Nations of Fisher River Cree Nation, Peguis First Nation, and Jackhead First Nation - 268 decided one thing:

Continue to protect our lands and waters for the benefit of our communities, our neighbours, and future generations 🤝

Who's munching over there?

Say hello to one of Canada's most iconic species — the Beaver, or Amisk in Cree.

Commonly spotted along lakes and streams throughout the Interlake region, beavers are nature’s master architects. Using sticks, logs, and other natural materials, they construct dams and lodges that transform the landscape.
While they sometimes get a bad rap, beavers are actually undercover heroes of the wetlands. As a keystone species, their engineering work creates and maintains wetland habitats. These wetlands play a vital role in the ecosystem — storing, filtering, and recharging groundwater, helping to prevent floods, and naturally purifying our water.
Who would’ve thought these small, buck-toothed creatures were the secret superheroes of the wetlands?

🌧 Climate 🐟 Water 🐻 Wildlife

Conserving the Interlake’s forests and wetlands means meeting big challenges with natural solutions.

Here’s how:
🌲 Forests absorb carbon and cool the climate
💧 Wetlands slow floodwaters and filter nutrients
🦫 Habitats support moose, beavers, eagles & more

This isn’t just about trees and ‘green spaces’ it’s about embracing the relationships that sustain us all: people, the land and water, and all our other relatives on the land, in the lakes and streams, and in the sky above.
