September 30th is Truth and Reconciliation Day. It is a day to remember and honour the children taken from their families, those who never returned home, and the individuals, families and communities still living with the lasting impacts caused by the residential school system.

As archivists, many of us walk with Indigenous Survivors and Intergenerational Survivors and their communities in the continued search for truth. It is up to each of us to listen to Survivors and uphold truth, especially in face of the rise in residential school denialism.

We hope archivists take time on September 30th to honour the children and their descendants, re-read the 94 Calls to Action, and recommit to taking action toward reconciliation in your archival efforts and institutions.

Storm season poses major threats to archives and heritage. In recent days, parts of Western Manitoba have been hard hit by heavy flooding. Our thoughts are with impacted communities.

In case of flood or other emergency, members of the heritage community can call the Canadian Conservation Institute (CCI) at 1-866-998-3721 for emergency advice. The line is available day or night. Press ‘0’ for security. Inform the operator that it is an emergency to ensure your call can be prioritized by the CCI’s conservators.

The CCI also has online information for families or individuals on “Salvaging personal valuables”. The direct links to the CCI resources are now posted in the AMA’s bio. Please share!

Stay safe Manitobans!

The AMA’s Past Chair (Heather Bidzinski), Chair (Corser Du Pont), and Advisor (Sarah Story) and were delighted to attend the historic occasion of the Welcoming Ceremony and Reception of the Hudson’s Bay Company Royal Charter. Today’s ceremony included a procession led by Dakota Hotain singers and dancers, a blessing and pipe ceremony, lighting of the qulliq, and meaningful speeches from Indigenous leaders and several government representatives.

The HBC Royal Charter, issued by King Charles II in 1670, granted exclusive land, trading, and exploration rights over the Hudson Bay watershed to the Governor and Company of Adventurers Trading into Hudson Bay (Hudson’s Bay Company). This resulted in the acceleration of colonization and the historical development of Canada. The Charter gave little consideration to the sovereign nations living on these lands and had impacts with lasting modern implications.

It will now be stewarded by a charter consortium including the Manitoba Museum, the Archives of Manitoba, the Canadian Museum of History, and the Royal Ontario Museum. The consortium has a commitment to preserve the document and to First Nations, Metis and Inuit communities, which includes public and national engagement and “ensuring robust and meaningful conversations in the years ahead.”

The view from the AMA’s Office on the 6th floor of Artspace located at 100 Arthur Street within Winnipeg’s Historic Exchange District, a national historic site.

Artspace is in Gault Building, a Richardsonian Romanesque-style warehouse designed by George Browne to house Montreal dry goods wholesaler A.F. Gault and Co. It was one of the first large warehouses built in response to Winnipeg’s rise as a regional distribution centre.

Artspace building opened its doors with fourteen founding tenants on October 30, 1986. Today, it is home to nearly two dozen arts and cultural organizations working in film, video, choral, book and magazine publishing, visual and new media arts, theatre, photography, and heritage. It is a key hub for the Arts & Cultural sector of Manitoba with writing and visual artist studios, 4 galleries, a theatre, darkrooms, editing bays, green screens, a sound studio, a library of works by Manitoba Playwrights and more! We share our office with the Manitoba Libraries Association.

Archives have important societal functions: enabling accountability, preserving memory, safeguarding rights, enhancing justice, and supporting the rule of law.

The 2026 theme “places emphasis on archives as active infrastructures that sustain justice across time, from past violations and present responsibilities to future claims and aspirations.”
