The most disappointing thing about this PR gift wasn’t coming face to face with what could be the actual embodiment of the autism industrial complex.

And it wasn’t using my last living brain cell to perform excitement while trying to hide the fact that their packaging made me think of environmental advocacy rather than autism advocacy.

No. The most disappointing part was the unshakable emptiness I knew could be seen on my face, despite my efforts.

I translate autistic experiences for millions of people and yet I still come home to the loneliness not of being unloved, but of having love and not enough real people to give it to.

Yes, I build bridges between the worlds of autistic people and everyone else, but I still haven’t figured out how to build a bridge to my own front door.

The most disappointing thing about this package was I didn’t want to be sitting in my office showing you cute fidget toys. I wanted to show you the kind of loneliness so many of us feel but most can’t talk about.

And for what it’s worth, Tangle makes a good fidget toy. They sent a box. I opened it. What came out wasn’t their fault. 🤷🏼‍♀️

Ultimately, I didn’t need another sensory toy tonight, I needed another person in the room. ❤️‍🩹
