Remembering Donna Johnston

Longtime Assiniboia Downs trainer Donna Johnston passed away last Saturday, December 6, at the age of 79.

Donna was a fixture in Barn C over the past few years at the Downs, and it was always a pleasure to stop by and say hi to her in the mornings. Donna had trained a few horses at the Downs since 1976, compiling a record of 103-130-130 from 861 starts, with her best horse being a big, tough Manitoba-bred named Arikana.

Our sincere condolences.

A celebration of life for Donna will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, December 13 at Assiniboia Downs.

It was a rainy miserable day for the final BBQ of the race season this past Friday. The BBQ Chefs endured the rain and once again put out great burgers and dogs. Thank you to everyone that supported the BBQ's this year, to all that helped either by cooking, preparing food items, picking up items and cleaning up after the BBQ, it was very much appreciated. Courtney and Marcia have given me a peak at what is coming up for 2026, it looks pretty exciting. The HBPA has a donut day planned for the final day of race entries on Saturday, October 4th to cap off the 2025 race season.
