🐛Chipmunk 2 is hungry for learning! 🦋 After they read the story The Very Hungry Caterpillar the children were all interested in bugs, so the staff planned a whole bunch of activities that were all about bugs. They did “critter dipping” for bugs in the water table (toy bugs, not real ones!), used play doh to make impressions of bugs, made their own butterfly’s and more! Our staff count legs on the bugs with the children to help them learn numbers and talk about the differences between bugs. When we plan around what the children are interested in, they are more engaged and curious. Spending multiple days exploring the topic gives children the time to get familiar with the topic, ask questions and develop a deeper understanding. 🐞

🌞Summer fun! All our groups have been finding lots of opportunities to enjoy the sunshine! Outdoor play is great because it encourages physical activity and helps children to develop strength, coordination and overall fitness. Our creative staff still find ways to bring out activities and sensory play so that the children still have all the opportunities for learning that are provided indoors.

Acorn 3 is doing some spring cleaning! The staff set up a fun sensory activity, the children had bins of soapy water to wash and lines to hang things to dry. The children love playing in water, especially with bubbles in it! Water play is a great sensory activity, it can help with children’s regulation and it’s also great exposure to different language talking about textures, wet, dry, bubbles and more. Hanging things on the lines was tricky, but they managed it! While they were hanging things it helped the children to practice their fine motor skills and pincer grasp, holding things with their thumb and pointer finger. Some fun learning and opportunity to explore a real world concept!

🚧Otters at work!🚧Our Otters were busy building bridges today, they had tape running between two tables and used different craft sticks to build a bridge for their cars and animals. This type of activity is so much fun because once the building part is done they get to play with the finished product! It helped them to practice their fine motor skills making sure the sticks were in the right place, it explored cause and effect as they figured out what worked for the bridges and it gave them practice working together as a team. During our spring melting if you need any bridges, you know who to call!🚧

Matching and sorting are two of the early ways that children learn math skills, Chipmunk 3 is putting those skills to the test! The children had lots of fun matching the shapes to the right spot on the paper, making sure that the magnets in the shapes didn’t stick to each other was an extra challenge! It didn’t just give the children the chance to practice sorting and matching, but it also helped the children to practice their motor skills by lining up the shapes.

Emergent curriculum… the final frontier🚀 Our Mighty Oaks children were interested in a book about space that was in the library. The staff found lots of different opportunities to explore that with the children. They provided science experiments, created moon rock sensory play and other art activities that connected back to the interest. Emergent curriculum is a plan that creates learning opportunities based on the interests that we observe. Children are much more involved in learning when it connects with a topic that they are interested in, these activities were out of this world! 🛸

We love to read and so do the Winkler Flyers! The province of Manitoba recognizes February as I love to read month. It’s an opportunity to celebrate the joys and benefits of reading and the importance of literacy. One of our classrooms was able to arrange for some players from the Winkler Flyers come in to read at our Northland location, everyone was very excited to have them come to visit! At Pine Ridge we've all been voting on our favourite books, make sure to add your vote next time you stop by! All our classrooms encourage literacy and reading daily, whether it’s by offering books in our library areas, planning activities that encourage literacy or leading circle times and singing songs! It all contributes to children developing literacy and language skills. These are critical skills that will help children not only to be successful through school but their entire lives!

🚗Acorn 1 is wheel-y excited for this matching game! The children drove their cars to the parking spots that matched the shapes on their cars. Matching is one of the first steps to learning math skills and it’s never too early to get started! The children also had the chance to practice some fine motor skills by driving and manipulating the cars and to practice some social skills by sharing a play space with each other.

💕And the winner is… our Grizzly room!💘We had a friendly door decorating contest between our classrooms for Valentine’s day, it was a nice way to build up some excitement and a sense of community in our centre. It was not an easy decision; everyone put so much effort into creating fun valentines themed art activities for the children to take part in. Our amazing staff provided so many opportunities for the children to experience some hands on art and learn the fine motor skills, colour mixing science, and all the other fun learning that goes along with art. We love our wonderful centre and all the staff and families that are part of it!
