Eseul lui Sebastian:
My Connection with Romania
I am an individual of Romanian descent born Canadian, however I was raised in a household that constantly promoted Romanian culture, which has taught me so much about who I am and where I came from. I am honored to have had a childhood fully engaged with a Romanian speaking family and community, as well as an early engagement to the Orthodox church with my involvement in the altar.
Growing up, I haven’t visited Romania very often. It was not something easy to do, and priorities were different. My most recent trip was during August of this year. However, this trip has opened my eyes more than any other. I didn’t have a very strong connection to my extended family as a child, as the majority reside in Oradea, the hometown of my parents, and could only be contacted through the internet. During my most recent visit, I have committed myself to learning more about my family members and most notably my grandparents. They have the most entertaining stories about their youth and have given me useful words of advice that I will never forget. Most importantly, they made some delicious traditional food, including mămăligă and mititei, which have been my favorite Romanian dishes from my childhood. I do certainly wish that I spent more time with my extended family as I was growing up, however I am grateful to have had the opportunity to connect with them on more personal levels and share memories and stories with them, whilst utilizing my Romanian verbal skills that have been in the making for over a decade.
Aside from family, I’ve learnt that the Romanian landscape is some of the most beautiful this world has to offer. I have had the opportunity to visit various villages in the countryside of Romania, which demonstrated a much more hard-working yet peaceful lifestyle still being carried out by older generations, as well as reaching the Heroes’ Cross on the Caraiman Peak in Bușteni, which had one of the most breathtaking views of a city that thrives within a landscape surrounded by the giant Carpathian mountains. Though Romania’s geography is beautiful, Romania has various historic locations that doesn’t only teach Romanian history, but that of Europe’s as well. I have visited Castelul Peleș, which used to be the home of the Romanian royal family. The architecture and structure of the castle told a story of what life used to be during that time and has left an imprint on my artistic side. These are only a select few locations that I have visited, yet they convey so much about Romanian history and culture.
Through time my parents have shared much of their knowledge of Romanian tradition and history, and I hope that they feel that they have succeeded, because I truly could not be happier to have a Romanian background. I am always willing to learn something new about our culture and history. I like to engage myself in our culture by prioritizing communication in Romanian, attending church as often as I can, and partaking in cultural events alongside friends who have been similarly raised. I have learned that even though I have not visited Romania many times, my identity is rather defined through the combined teachings of my parents, community, my engagement to the Orthodox church and my connection with God. As I continue through my adulthood, I intend to cherish what I know and to continuously expand on it through eventual visits with friends and family to other regions of Romania and then one day pass down my knowledge to the next generation

Scrisoare de prezentare:
I am Sebastian, an 18-year-old first year student at the University of Windsor studying BSc Honours Biomedical Sciences. I was born in Windsor and have resided in this city to this present day. I attended l’École Élémentaire Catholique Saint-Antoine for Elementary School, which is a full French school that created a strong foundation in my French-speaking abilities and permitted me to earn a certification for the Diplôme d’Études en Langue Française at the B2 level during my time at Tecumseh Vista Academy High School, which is an internationally recognized French language exam. I first learned to speak Romanian at a young age and adapted to English and French very quickly. I am presently trilingual, and I aim to learn other languages as I continue my studies, including Spanish. Over the years, I have been very active in sports, most notably tennis and swimming. I played tennis casually and competed every now and then, but I swam competitively for the last year and a half. I decided to commit to the sport because of the health benefits, friendships, and competition between fellow swimmers. However, I have slowed down with the sport due to my studies, and I still try to make time to swim.
During my secondary education, I’ve grown a keen interest in mathematics and biological sciences and have always had a passion for learning new concepts within those subjects. They were my focus and have carried into my post-secondary education, in which I’ve chosen to pursue a biology-based degree with the hopes of one day pursuing a professional education, likely in medicine. I aspire to help people, and with my passion in biological sciences, I truly believe that a career in medicine would suit me and would bring me satisfaction in my career.
As someone who likes to help people, I’ve also committed time to volunteering at various locations. I volunteered at Code Ninjas for over a year, which is a place that teaches younger students essential programming skills and develops their critical thinking skills to be able to solve problems independently. I was very happy teaching them computer concepts, and I have also learned the value of effort and collaboration. Currently, I volunteer as a swim coach for the Tecumseh Vista Academy school swim team, which is also the team I used to swim with. I push the athletes to better themselves and to try more difficult things in the pool, as competitive swimming has taught me that doing things outside of one’s comfort zone will build a wonderful character, physically and mentally.
Growing up, my parents have always brought me to church, and I’ve been part of the altar for over a third of my life. I learned many things that the priest does within the altar, but most importantly, I’ve developed an ongoing relationship with the Orthodox church and God. I attend masses as often as I can with my parents, and whenever I see the younger generation partaking in what I used to do, I remember that I was once there and I am happy that newer generations are still partaking in our traditions. I am usually present at any events that occur at the church, and during bigger events that occur during the summer, such as the Romanian festivals, I volunteer and assist patrons and other volunteers with tasks to keep things running smoothly, and to ensure that everyone feels that they belong.
This bursary would be of great assistance with my ongoing education as a full-time program does become demanding in terms of finance, and I am grateful for a consideration.
Sincerely,
Sebastian Sora

Growing up with parents who have high expectations for me, I have become a very optimistic person. Some may say I’m the most optimistic person they have ever met. Since grade school, I’ve known that I want to go into the sciences. I started exploring several career paths that I could take, but my parents always told me to shoot for the stars. They told me to make big dreams and goals because if I don’t work hard enough to at least try and achieve them, I wouldn’t know if I could ever make it. Therefore, I’ve been dreaming of becoming a surgeon. This dream has truly strengthened once I took Biology and Chemistry at a more prestigious level. I worked very hard in high school to maintain above a ninety average in all of my classes and was accepted into the Biomedical Science program here at Windsor. The Biomedical Science program truly stood out to me because I am able to learn the basics of science and medical expectations, at a more profound level before entering medical school. I am thrilled to continue at the University and expand my knowledge within the sciences. A huge goal I have for myself is to go study at a prestigious medical school. As a student-athlete, I had the opportunity to go train with volleyball teams at universities such as John’s Hopkins University and University of Michigan. These visits have put me in the mindset to work extra hard to become a top surgeon, as these schools greatly represent academic achievement. In addition to these opportunities, I’ve gotten involved in our community many ways to be able to give back to the community- a key concept in becoming a doctor. This includes being involved in Sunday school, parish camps, and overall an active member in the Romanian community. Outside of Sunday services, some examples of how I’ve given back to the community includes volunteer work at Erie Shores Healthcare, St. Anne’s Fashion Show Committee which raised money for charity, and as of recently be a part of the University of Windsor Crafts for a Cure club, which donates crafts for the children at Windsor Regional Hospital. Lastly, I’m an Outstanding Scholar at the University of Windsor, which participates in research programs to further expand experimental findings. By thriving to become a doctor, I’m looking to help younger children who may have incurable diseases. Living in the 20th century, my generation is the face of medicine and with a high demand in the medical field, I know that I can contribute to the development of our healthcare system. In conclusion, Graiul Românesc Scholarship Program would greatly contribute to my education and the face of medicine, sustaining a future medical student within their medical studies and path towards healthcare.

Andrei Stupariu – câștigător a unei burse de merit oferita anul acesta de către Graiul Romanesc
Uni ar spune “prea frumos ca sa fie si deștept". Ei bine, Andrei este si frumos si deștept. Ca toți ceilalți studenți, are alături familia lui, o familie de romani adevărați, puternic implicați in comunitatea noastră si bineînțeles, membri ai Graiului Romanesc.
Andrei a fost acceptat la University of Windsor, alegând sa studieze computer science.
Mult succes Andrei!

Eseul lui Andrei:
What Romania means to me.
Although I was born in Canada, Romania has always felt like a second home. Whenever possible, my family and I spend our vacations there, returning to the places where my parents grew up. Each visit gives me the chance to reconnect with my roots and to experience the rich mix of history, tradition, and natural beauty that Romania has to offer.
I have been fortunate to visit both of my parents’ hometowns, places filled with historic buildings, old stone streets, and landmarks that have stood for generations. At the same time, I’ve seen new developments rising around them, showing how Romania blends the past with the future. Growing up, Romanian was my first language. In our home, we always ate traditional foods, listened to Romanian music from different regions, and took part in community events and church gatherings. These experiences helped me stay connected to my heritage, even while living far from the country my family came from.
Romania’s landscapes have also shaped many of my memories. The Carpathian Mountains, with their forests and beautiful trails, feel both peaceful and powerful. The beaches along the Black Sea are full of life, especially in the summer, and create an atmosphere completely different from the quiet mountain villages. From historic cities to towering castles and medieval streets, Romania offers countless reminders of its long and vibrant past.
But my best memory is much simpler: waking up to the smell of fresh bread made by my grandma. My grandparents live on a farm, and every morning felt magical. My grandma makes the best bread, clătite, and șnițele, and those homemade meals always gave me the energy to run outside and chase the chickens. Those moments, filled with laughter, are the ones that stay with me the most.
All these experiences have helped me understand who I am and where my family comes from. Romania is not just a place on a map for me; it is a part of my identity. Keeping these traditions alive, staying involved in the community, and returning whenever we can makes me feel connected to both my heritage and the people who shaped it.

Scrisoare de prezentare:
My name is Andrei Stupariu, and I was born and raised in Windsor. I am currently 18 years old and have recently graduated from Tecumseh Vista Secondary School. I have just begun my studies in the Computer Science program at the University of Windsor, where I plan to complete my undergraduate degree over the next four years. This program represents the foundation of the career I hope to build in the field of cyber security.
Both of my parents immigrated to Canada from Romania, and my upbringing has always been shaped by the values, traditions, and work ethic they brought with them. Growing up, I learned the importance of community, perseverance, and always making the most of every opportunity. These lessons have guided me throughout high school and now as I begin my post-secondary education.
One of the main ways I push myself forward is by seeking out opportunities to learn beyond the classroom. Over the past few years, I have participated in six hackathons, competitions where teams have a limited amount of time to create a working project. With the same dedicated team, I have been fortunate to earn notable achievements, including Best in Category at Winhacks 2025, and 2nd place at NASA Space Apps. These experiences strengthened my passion for cyber security and software development, and showed me the value of collaboration and innovation under pressure.
I also try to get involved in meaningful ways at school and in the community. A major contribution I made was during our school’s Multicultural Fest, an event celebrating diversity. Wanting to help students feel engaged and included, I created a website that tracked scores from various cultural mini games, helping make the event interactive and exciting. It was rewarding to see students from many backgrounds participate and enjoy the experience together.
My volunteer experiences have also shaped who I am. For my high school volunteer hours, I volunteered at Code Ninjas, where I helped kids understand coding and supported them whenever they needed guidance with their projects. This experience eventually led to my first part-time job there, which strengthened my interest in mentoring and teaching others. I have also been consistently involved in activities at my local Romanian church. When I was younger, I was part of the Sunday school choir and a member of the Romanian traditional dance group, performing at various church celebrations. These experiences helped me stay connected to my heritage and to the Romanian community in Windsor.
Looking ahead, my goal is to build a career in cyber security, protecting digital systems and helping make technology safer for everyone. To achieve this, I am committed to working hard in my studies, staying active in projects and competitions, and continuing to participate in community initiatives whenever possible. Support through scholarships would make a meaningful difference as I focus on my academic journey and develop the skills I need to reach my career aspirations.
Thank you for considering my application.
Sincerely,
Andrei Stupariu
