Scientists just uncovered hidden virus fragments in long COVID patients—finally pointing to a real, measurable biomarker for this mysterious condition.
In a major step forward, researchers from the Translational Genomics Research Institute and the Lundquist Institute found remnants of SARS-CoV-2 proteins—specifically from the virus’s RNA replicase enzyme—still lingering in the blood, even months after infection.
These ghost-like viral fragments were tucked inside tiny cellular packages called extracellular vesicles, and crucially, they were missing in pre-pandemic samples.
🧪 The discovery, published in Infection, suggests the virus may hide out in the body’s reservoirs long after recovery—possibly explaining persistent symptoms like fatigue, brain fog, and post-exertional crashes.
⚠️ While more research is needed to confirm if this means active infection or leftover debris, it's a huge step toward diagnosis, validation, and maybe even treatment for long COVID survivors.
👉 Long COVID is real. And now, the evidence might be too—at the molecular level.
