Cat Advocacy and Rescue Association - CARA

Cat Advocacy and Rescue Association - CARA We are a small Cat Advocacy and Rescue Association located in Windsor, ON. Our goal is to provide the best possible care to feral cats in our community.

CARA is made up of a network of dedicated individuals who are committed to providing the best possible care to feral cats and kittens in Windsor. We take a comprehensive approach to our rescue work, which includes the following:

- Responding to calls or emails from community members regarding feral cats and kittens

- Trapping feral cats and kittens and bringing them into foster homes

- De-wormi

ng and de-fleaing all cats and kittens upon arrival into foster care

- Providing each individual cat or kitten with a full veterinary assessment

- Spaying/neutering, full vaccinations, and any other recommended treatments based on the veterinary assessment

- Behavioural assessments to determine whether the cat or kitten can be socialized for an indoor home

- Adoption into an indoor home OR, if deemed too feral for an indoor home, returned to previous location with a guaranteed neighbourhood caregiver who will provide food, water, shelter, and who will consistently monitor the cat for signs of illness or injury

- Provision of follow up care to released cats where needed or appropriate

We believe that a comprehensive approach is the ONLY responsible approach to feral cat care. Simply trapping, spaying/neutering, and releasing cats is not enough. Reliable and accessible sources of food, fresh water, and shelter are essential. Furthermore, consistent monitoring is imperative in order to attend to signs of illness or injury in a timely manner. Many illnesses or injuries can be undetectable unless an attentive individual notices changes in eating habits, behaviour, or physical appearance.

Today is Gilbert's four week birthday and I hoped to post something a bit more positive, but the little guy has not been himself for the past two days. I took him in to see the vet earlier and I've been instructed to give him fluids tonight and if he's not better by morning, take him back to the clinic.
Kittens at this age are still very fragile and they can go downhill very quickly.

Please think positive thoughts for him!

Ruthie had her spay and minor dental procedure today and everything went well. When I went in to see her, I told her that her kittens were doing fabulously and that she did an awesome job raising them, but from here on out she only needs to care for herself. (With our help of course!)
This is the beginning of the next chapter of her life, which will be everything a little princess kitty could ever want!

I have made another friend.
The long-haired one in the middle front.
But the short-haired dark grey kitten in the middle still spits at me every single time he sees me. Look at his face!
I told him if he keeps this up I'll give everyone else chicken except him! 🤣

I settled the big white guy into a kennel today and the transfer thankfully went very smoothly. He is VERY food motivated so that helped a lot.

I'm still not sure about his temperament since we are only just getting to know one another. Plus one of the meds he is getting in his food has a sedative effect.
I am also not sure if he can hear or not because statistically, all white cats born with blue eyes are often deaf. However, his non-reaction to loud noises today could just be a result of all of the gunk in his ears.

Once he was settled into the kennel and had eaten every morsel of food, he fell asleep. I watched him trying his best to keep his eyes open as he watched me washing out litter boxes and doing laundry on the other side of the room, but he just couldn't fight it any longer. Tom cats like him are exhausted from constantly needing to look for food, defending their territory, mating, or dodging all the human related dangers in their environment.
It's an exhausting lifestyle.

I expect that he will get the best sleep of his life tonight.

The biopsy results aren't in yet.

I've given him the name Norman. After the actor who played Daryl on TWD. A little rough looking on the outside but really just a sweetheart.
Fingers crossed that this big white guy has a similar personality!

Bertie came here six and a half weeks ago after being abandoned by his mom or dropped as she was moving her kittens to another location. He was then left for too long all alone in a backyard before finally being taken to safety. That he even survived all of that is a bit of a miracle.

When he first arrived here the infections in both eyes were so bad I thought for sure he would be blind. But Bertie was a fighter. With the help of various antibiotics and supportive treatments, we were able to save a good portion of the vision in his left eye.

Today, Bertie is an extremely active and playful kitten. He hasn't let his vision impairment stop him from trying to play with the big cats or curiously exploring his environment.

On Sunday, Bertie leaves to go to his furever home! He will be joining a family who have a young cat and a dachshund I think he will thoroughly enjoy playing with.

I know all of you join me in wishing Bertie the bestest life ever!!

Do you remember the sweet, but extremely timid kitty named Murphy?
It's been a minute since I've posted about him, so here's an update!

We managed to catch Murphy just before Halloween last year in the pouring rain. I had received a message the week previously about an orange tabby cat who had recently shown up at a business with a huge wound on his back.
After the business owner had been unsuccessful in catching him, we were quite anxious to get Murphy to a vet as soon as possible, so we decided to make the trip to Leamington to get him.

Yesterday, I took Murphy to see the vet for a sedated exam so that I could get his ears and his wounds checked. As well as his nails trimmed and a few other small housekeeping things.

The wound on his back is 99% healed and some fur has grown back in. If you had told me when we first met Murphy that his back would take more than six months to heal, I probably would have laughed. But here we are.

However, his ears are still an issue so he received another dose of long-acting medication to help with the fungal infection, which I expect to need to repeat in 30 days. His 'cauliflower ears' make treating them more of a challenge because they don't receive the same airflow as normal cat ears.

Murphy's first weigh-in at the vet last year was 7.9 lbs. Yesterday, he weighed-in at 11.9 lbs. Four pounds of weight gained in about half a year isn't too shabby! That four pounds is mostly chicken. Shorty's chicken to be precise. 🤣

To be fair, it wouldn't be too difficult for any cat to put on that much weight, especially when they're confined to a kennel. Which leads me to the next part of the update.

I said when we first caught Murphy that I didn't think he was feral. I thought that he just needed some careful persuasion as to how wonderful some humans can be, and that I would employ my usual technique of food bribery to prove this to him.
Unfortunately, Murphy needed more than chicken to trust me. He also needed time.

So, he and I have been working on our trust issues and he has made some great progress! He will now eat in front of me, sometimes even before I've closed his kennel door. Especially if there's chicken in bowl. Only a few months ago, he wouldn't eat until I had fully moved away into the other room and he didn't think I was watching him.
Now, when he hears me coming down the stairs, he immediately sits up and cranes his neck to watch me walk towards him in anticipation of food or treats. A few months ago he would jump from his bed into his litter box and would cower until I had left the vicinity.

He used to be quite combative when I'd slowly reach in to take the bowls for cleaning or to swap out his linens. Now, he understands and trusts the routine so all I have to do is gently coax him over a bit so I can do what I need to do.
Getting him into a carrier before was kind of an nightmare and he always peed all over due to his stress level. Whereas yesterday, there was no peeing and he didn't fight me nearly as much. He also did not panic when I lifted the carrier.

Lastly, two more not so subtle changes with Murph.
The first is that last week was the first time that he played with a toy! He actually drowned the felt mouse in his water dish, and completely destroyed the catnip ravioli! Up until now he wouldn't even touch any toys, catnip or otherwise, that I gave him.
The second, which to me was by far the biggest change in him, was when we got home yesterday from seeing the vet. After he had a couple of hours to decompress, I went downstairs to see if he had forgiven me for dragging him to the clinic, and he immediately stood up, came towards the front of the kennel and lightly rubbed his forehead against the kennel door a few times.
He was ASKING for pets!! 🤗

I said before that I did not think that he was feral and I still don't think he ever was. I think like many of the cats we come across, he had a super sh*tty start to his life, and maybe even some negative behaviour directed towards him from someone, which would account for his demeanor. I think if I give him enough time and space and chicken of course, he and I will eventually become friends, so that he can come live upstairs with the rest of the gang!
