June is Men’s Health Month. 💙 When we talk about men's health, we need to talk about eating disorders.

Men facing eating disorders experience unique challenges—from heavy stigma and misconceptions to a natural reluctance to reach out for help. Because symptoms can present differently than they traditionally do in women, timely diagnosis and treatment are often delayed. Let’s break the silence and the stigma.

Today is World Eating Disorders Action Day, a global movement held every year on June 2. This year’s theme - “Stop Stigma, Start Care, Together” - calls on all of us to challenge harmful myths, expand access to support, and build systems of care that truly meet people where they are.

To honour the power of community and lived experience, we asked people what meaningful eating disorder care looks like to them. Their answers remind us that none of us are along when we work together for change.

Follow along this month as we share their stories - grounded in hope, honesty, and the belief that care should be accessible to everyone.

June is Pride Month—a time of global celebration and advocacy, but also an important moment to highlight the intersection between LGBTQIA+ identities and eating disorders.

LGBTQIA+ adults, adolescents, and transgender individuals experience a significantly higher risk and incidence of eating disorders compared to their cisgender and heterosexual peers.

This increased vulnerability is driven by layered factors, including minority stress, social stigma, discrimination, and intense pressure to conform to narrow societal or cultural body ideals.

It’s crucial to raise awareness, provide support, and foster a safe environment that embraces diversity, acceptance, and body positivity for everyone, regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity.

Choosing recovery from an eating disorder takes immense courage, and it’s completely normal to feel a mix of fear and uncertainty about the next steps. 🤍

If you’ve been wondering what outpatient treatment looks like with us, here is a glimpse: Our clinicians provide personalized, individual care using Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT).

What does that mean? CBT is a supportive form of talk therapy where we work together to:

-Address disordered eating habits.
-Unpack and reframe difficult thoughts around food, weight, and body shape.
-Work towards normalizing eating, reducing symptoms, and building body acceptance.

You don't have to navigate this alone. We're here to help.

World Eating Disorders Action Day is a global awareness movement held every year on June 2. Founded in 2014 by individuals with lived experience and families, the day now brings organizations, communities, clinicians, researchers, and advocates from more than 50 countries to push for real change.

The goal is simple and urgent: to challenge harmful myths, break stigma, share evidence-based information, and advocate for stronger, more coherent systems of care.

Each year, communities across the world host events, webinars, campaigns, and conversations to amplify awareness and expand access to help.

Eating Disorders Nova Scotia and BANA are pleased to share this engaging educational series.
From early depictions in art to modern media, we’ll dive into how shifting ideals have influenced the way we see ourselves and each other.

Western body ideals have evolved over time, and understanding their history can support healing and recovery.

This virtual workshop series explores the history and evolution of Western body ideals, drawing on a five-part series by Heather Leblanc, MSW, RSW, published in BANA’s Be Yourself Magazine. Together, we’ll trace how cultural, political, and social forces have shaped body expectations over time.
From early depictions in art and literature to modern media and diet culture, we’ll examine how shifting ideals have influenced the way we see ourselves and each other. We’ll also explore how these standards connect to systems such as racism, sexism, and anti-fat bias, and how understanding their origins can challenge harmful narratives today.

Register for Part 1 at: https://www.eventbrite.ca/e/the-history-of-western-body-ideals-part-1-ancient-greece-to-wwi-tickets-1987530274554?aff=oddtdtcreator

*Save the Date for Part 2 on July 6: Roaring 20s to Present Day

Heather Leblanc, MSW, RSW, is a registered social worker and psychotherapist with the Bulimia Anorexia Nervosa Association (BANA). She specializes in eating disorders, disordered eating, and body image, and is passionate about helping people reduce body shame.

Our workshops are free and open to anyone aged 16+ who is located in Canada.

Inspired by the KAIROS Blanket Exercise and hosted by the Windsor Essex Ontario Health Team – BANA staff along with others from across the community were part of an experiential learning journey on colonialism, racism and First Nations, Inuit and Métis Health.

This interactive learning activity is designed to help participants better understand the historical and ongoing impacts of colonization on First Nations, Inuit, and Métis Peoples in Canada, with a main focus on healthcare.

Through movement, storytelling, and reflection, participants are guided through key events that have shaped Indigenous experiences and realities.
