This Black History Month, and every day, we reflect on the profound impact of Black history on UWSA’s journey to success. Join us in celebrating the remarkable contributions of our past Black presidents, embodying the essence of Black excellence.
“My time in UWSA leadership coincided with the beginning of Dr. Alan Wildeman’s tenure as University President in 2008-2009. I felt a deep responsibility to ensure he understood and acted on the needs of all students and worked alongside students in partnership toward a flourishing University community.
“Yes we can” was our shared leadership mantra as we bore witness to the historic presidential election of Barack Obama in the US. There was a collective sense of hope that change was possible on our campus in areas where it was greatly needed. Student leaders refused to accept the status quo and pushed for increased student financial support, operational and infrastructure changes to better suit the needs of student life, and a more welcoming and equitable campus community for all students.
Navigating such a storied year as UWSA president shaped me into the leader I am today. And I am grateful to continue to call many of the activists who I had the honour of serving alongside true friends so many years later. We made good trouble together.”
