π³οΈβπ Happy Pride Month! π³οΈβπ
As we begin this month of celebration, reflection, visibility, and advocacy, we honour the vibrant history of q***r Jewish life.
LGBTQ+ Jews have always been part of Jewish life β as artists, teachers, activists, caregivers, rabbis, family members, community-builders, and seekers of belonging. From Magnus Hirschfeld, a German Jewish doctor and pioneer of LGBTQ+ rights in the early 1900s, to activists like Leslie Feinberg and Rabbi Allen Bennett, the first openly gay rabbi in the U.S., q***r Jews have been on the frontlines of liberation movements for over a century. Some were celebrated, while many were hidden, excluded, or are remembered only in fragments.
Pride reminds us that visibility matters. Jewish memory reminds us that every story matters.
At the Windsor Jewish Federation and Community Centre, we recognize that Jewish identity and q***r identity are deeply intertwined for many. Too often, Q***r Jews have felt the need to choose between their identities rather than embrace their interconnectivity. This Pride Month, and always, we reaffirm our commitment to being an inclusive, pluralistic space that embraces all sexual orientations, gender identities, gender expressions, and forms of Jewish practice.
Today, more than ever, we are called to ensure safety, accessibility, dignity, and inclusion for every LGBTQ+ person. As censorship seeks to erase q***r stories, as laws threaten trans lives, and as hatred works against acceptance, we hold fast to the Jewish value that all people are created bβtzelem Elohim β in the image of God.
This month, we honour the generations of Q***r Jews who came before us, those who fought to build safer and more welcoming Jewish spaces, and those who continue to bring their full selves into Jewish community today.
May our community be a place where every person is seen, valued, and embraced. Letβs celebrate Pride by remembering our past, showing up for each other in the present, and building a joyful, just future together. πβ‘οΈ
