Happy Emancipation Day! 🩷💚

Today we honour August 1, 1834 — the day the Slavery Abolition Act ended legal enslavement across the British Empire, and we celebrate the resilience, strength, and enduring legacy of the African diaspora.

Right here in Windsor, that legacy runs deep. From the 1930s through the mid-1960s, our community hosted "The Greatest Freedom Show on Earth" — once the largest Emancipation Day celebration in North America, drawing over 300,000 visitors and guests like Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Eleanor Roosevelt, Jesse Owens, and Mary McLeod Bethune.

Today August 1st, that history comes full circle with the grand opening of the Emancipation Celebration Monument in Jackson Park — honouring the Underground Railroad and festival founder Walter "Mr. Emancipation" Perry.

To our members and supporters across Canada, the Commonwealth, and the Caribbean in the Ingenious International Region: today is for remembrance, education, and celebration. Happy 118th Founders’ Day, Sisters of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated®!

On this special day, January 15, 1908, nine phenomenal women at Howard University lit a spark that grew into a vibrant, global sisterhood.

From Miner Hall to the world, we now stand over 360,000 strong across 12 nations, the U.S., Bahamas, Bermuda, Canada, UAE, Germany, Japan, Liberia, Nigeria, South Korea, South Africa, and the U.S. Virgin Islands, united in purpose, service, and sisterly love.

As we continue to Soar to Greater Heights of Service and Sisterhood under the 2022–2026 Administration, we honor the extraordinary legacy of our Founders and celebrate the generations of women who carry their vision forward.

Here’s to 118 years of impact, elegance, leadership, and love. And here’s to soaring even higher—together! 🩷💚
