WindsorEssex Community Foundation

WindsorEssex Community Foundation Building a better Windsor-Essex for today and forever!

We support donor desires for long-term impact while funding creative initiatives that will leave a lasting impact. Founded in 1983 as Heritage Windsor, later renamed the Greater Windsor Community Foundation, today we are known as the WindsorEssex Community Foundation (WECF). The WECF is dedicated to making our community an even better place to live, work, learn and grow by strategically connecting

donors to community needs and opportunities. We help build a vibrant, healthy community by providing grants to various sectors of the community from health & human services, education, and arts & culture to community development, the environment, and children & youth. We also lead a variety of community initiatives including Random Act of Kindness Day, the Vital Signs program, the Young Philanthropists, the Vitality Legacy Program, and the Biennial Community Cup Pro-Am Golf Tournament.

WECF are proud to share a wrap-up from our latest Together for Justice roundtable.

As part of this 12-month pilot led by Community Foundations of Canada in collaboration with The Law Foundation of Ontario, WECF continues to work alongside incredible local partners to better understand and address barriers to justice in rural, remote, and northern communities.

Last week marked our third and final roundtable, where organizations came together to share progress, reflect on challenges, and deepen collaboration.

It has been our priviledge to work with six dedicated partners advancing access to rural justice across Windsor-Essex:

• South Essex Community Council - SECC
• Violence Against Women Coordinating Committee Windsor-Essex
• Clinique juridique bilingue Windsor-Essex Bilingual Legal Clinic
• Windsor Essex Child/Youth Advocacy Centre
• Community Living Essex County
• Youth Diversion

These conversations are helping shape meaningful, community-driven solutions grounded in lived experience.

Thank you to all our partners for your continued leadership and commitment!

Movies, community, and summer nights under the stars! From June 12–14, the Front Lawn of the Aquatic Centre in Downtown Windsor transforms into an open-air cinema for WIFF Under the Stars.

WECF is proud to celebrate this event alongside our community partner Windsor International Film Festival, who are bringing our community together to kick off summer with a free, three-day celebration of film for everyone to enjoy!

Bring your blankets, lawn chairs, friends, and family, and settle in for a weekend filled with unforgettable movie moments. Plus, enjoy local treats like fresh popcorn and classic soda while you watch!

We’re proud to celebrate events like this that bring people together and make arts and culture accessible to all.

Arts Council Windsor & Region's New Voices billboard installation is officially returning, bringing its message of creativity, visibility, and community empowerment to Ford City.

Originally launched in 2021 by ACWR, this powerful public art project amplified the work of local artists from underrepresented communities, until it was paused due to unforeseen changes to its original location.

Now, with support from the WECF Community Impact Grant, New Voices is back for one year in partnership with Artcite Inc., bringing a bold, text-based billboard to Ford City.

In the short term, this installation will transform the streetscape into a space for reflection, creativity, and conversation, inviting residents to engage with diverse perspectives through experimental poetry and storytelling.

Looking ahead, the program's momentum is only growing. ACWR has announced that artist proposals for the 2026 New Voices program will open in June, inviting creators from across Windsor Essex to share their stories, perspectives, and experimental approaches to text based art.

New Voices continues to evolve, but its heart remains the same: transforming public space into a platform for reflection, dialogue, and connection. We can’t wait to see how the next wave of artists will shape this growing project.

As we prepare to recognize this year’s scholarship recipients at our Scholarship Breakfast in June, we’re proud to spotlight the funds helping students across Windsor-Essex achieve their educational goals — including the Rattray Family Scholarship Fund, held at the WindsorEssex Community Foundation.

The Rattray Family Scholarship Fund honours the legacy of Dave Rattray, a lifelong music lover and dedicated supporter of the local arts community. From playing flugel horn in England and the British Air Force brass band, to supporting the Windsor Symphony and performing with several local choirs, music remained a central part of Dave’s life.

In retirement, Dave helped establish the Windsor Essex Youth Choir and continued contributing to Windsor’s vibrant musical community through performance and advocacy.

This scholarship, which will present its very first award this year, will support students enrolled in music programs at the University of Windsor and St. Clair College, helping future musicians pursue their passion and continue Dave’s legacy of community and creativity.

🎂 Birthday Boxes: Birthday kits for families in women’s shelters to help every child feel celebrated

These projects show that even small acts of kindness can make a big impact. 💛

As we get closer to announcing this year’s scholarship recipients at our Scholarship Breakfast in June, we’re proud to highlight the funds that continue to support students across Windsor-Essex.

Established in 1992, the Father Matt Sheedy Scholarship Fund held at the WindsorEssex Commmunity Foundation honours the legacy of Father Matt Sheedy, former principal of Assumption College School and founder of the Assumption Alumni Association.

Thanks to the generosity of the Assumption College School Mothers’ Club, the Bingo Club, and friends, the scholarship continues to help graduating Assumption College Catholic High School students pursue post-secondary studies in health-related fields — creating opportunities for deserving students for more than 30 years.
