Have you noticed yellow particles floating on the water recently? It's pollen!

Pollen should not be mistaken for algae. It is yellow-green, dust-like, and floats mainly on the surface of water bodies.

In the spring and early summer, pollen from pines and other trees can fall onto the surface of the water forming a large yellow film. It may collect on the edge of shorelines or float for long periods in open water. It can also become water-logged and sink to the bottom.

While pollen is unpleasant for allergy sufferers, it is otherwise harmless.

“Through RALP, we were able to transition a marginal, or unproductive portion of our farmland allowed us to make a positive impact...”- Rina Hyland

By converting marginal farmland into a wetland and meadow, you can create new habitats, increase biodiversity, and improve water quality — all while reducing the challenge of farming wet, low productivity land.

Success can be measured by tracking water levels, plant growth, native and invasive species, and the wildlife that increases in the area. It’s a long term commitment, but one that reminds us that healthy farms and healthy ecosystems go hand-in-hand.

Invasive Plant Spotlight | Periwinkle
Periwinkle is a popular garden ground cover, but it can spread far beyond where it is planted and overtake nearby natural areas. It has become established in many parts of Canada, where it forms dense mats that outcompete native wildflowers and reduce habitat for pollinators and other wildlife.

When choosing plants for your garden, avoid purchasing periwinkle and consider native alternatives instead.

As we head into peak cottage season, a reminder on Muskoka’s Dark Sky By-Law. Have an outward facing motion activated LED spotlight that’s left on 24/7? Light trespass reaches across the lake by reflection on the water and also trespasses across properties. Use outdoor illumination only when necessary. Help everyone better enjoy our beautiful starry night sky, including local wildlife and migrating birds!
