Passing on a message from this organization that Target Climate has joined. I can’t attend meetings, and have been away so apologies that this is too late for the July 8 meeting - but there is good information in it.
Hello OCEC Coalition Members,
We hope everyone had a great Canada Day long weekend and a great summer ahead!
In the month’s pause since the Ontario provincial election we hope you’ve had a chance to rest, reflect and re-invigorate. With a climate in crisis and more at stake than ever before in an election, it was deeply disappointing to see the lowest voter turnout in Ontario’s history. One of OCEC’s key mandates, to increase public awareness of the climate crisis to drive voting on environmental policy, is clearly more important than ever. The record of massive environmental failures of the current re-elected government also means that OCEC’s other key mandate to hold Government accountable to our 12 Point Climate Action Plan is likewise critically important.
With only 43% voter turnout and 41% of those votes cast handing a majority to the current government, the final 2022 election outcome reflects only 18% of all eligible voters. This means the majority of voters’ voices are not reflected in the current government. So many of whom understand that we cannot have a livable future without urgent climate action right now.
Within just a few short months, over 250 groups representing over 850,00 Ontarians from diverse sectors and walks of life signed on to the OCEC! We know you get it. We know you want a better future. YOU know this can only be secured with sound government environmental policy. Signing on was just the beginning. Let’s get to work on voters for the October municipal elections and let’s hold government accountable right now as the new cabinet is declared and the budget is planned for early release in August. Let’s use the huge collective power we can exert by working together to move this work forward!
