A very exciting development for the Central Cariboo Community Food Hub's Cariboo Seed Project! We now have a seed library rack set up at the Williams Lake library, where you can grab seed that you would like to grow out for saving and documenting with us.

Big thanks to Jennifer and staff for hosting this for us.

History time! This year is the 17th Seedy Saturday in Williams Lake! The second indoor market here in Williams Lake.even though it snowed.. spring is here! Today is one of the earliest in the season Seedy Saturdays we've ever had.

Today - come on out to the TRU gym from 10-2. Over the years it's been hosted all across this town. This year it is hosted in partnership by the Williams Lake Farmers Market and the Central Cariboo Community Food Hub. If you come by today, give a shout out to Market Manage Barb Scharf or Food Hub's Stephanie Bird - these two women do an outstanding job of making it happen.

So... Why Seedy Saturday? Well - first, you tell us? What brings you out?

The very first named Seedy Saturday happened in Vancouver in 1990. Seeds of Diversity β€” Canada's grassroots seed saving network β€” helped spark the movement, and it's been growing ever since. Today there are 170+ events coast to coast. The purpose is simple and radical: keep seeds local, keep varieties alive, keep growers in control of their own food.

How do we bring food production back into our communities? How do we make sure gardeners have access to reliable, safe seed and have autonomy in their growing.

Come on out to find inspiration, do some shopping, connect with the wealth of experience in the room.

The Salvation Army in Williams Lake is in need of more volunteers in their kitchen. They are one of the Food Hubs spoke organizations that provide important food access in our community.

If you're interested in helping to prepare or serve meals, sort donations, lead a craft or activity at the drop-in or otherwise - you can reach out directly to Sarah Jackman, the Community Engagement Coordinator for the Williams Lake Salvation Army, at [email protected].

In Williams Lake we've seen a 9.2% increase of food bank usage in the last year, which is almost double the national average of 5.2%.

This was a great win for everyone last year! Our Food Hub project had a couple of freezers we had purchased for this very purpose, so when the Better At Home program in 100MH needed more freezer space, it was an easy YES.

The United Way BC Better At Home program in 100 Mile House was in dire need of more freezer space as they were making and freezing over 400 meals per month for seniors and didn't have the ability to store these vital meals. The United Way BC Central Cariboo Food Hub stewarded by the Social Planning Council of Williams Lake and Area in Williams Lake stepped up and donated a freezer to the program. It was filled with nutritious meals the following week and illustrates the web of care United Way BC donors are making possible in the Thompson Nicole Cariboo.

Everyone deserves access to nutritious food. Today is World Food Day! You can help those in your community in need by donating now: https://uwbc.ca/food/

Together, we are UNITED for food security.
