It’s with profound sadness that we share the passing of our dear friend and respected colleague, Thomas Alexis.

Thomas served as UFFCA President for many years, having earned the deep respect and trust of our board members and colleagues throughout the Fraser River watershed and across the province. He was selected for this critical role not only for his knowledge and experience, but for the kindness, generosity, and strength of character he brought to everything he did. He was a true salmon warrior, with a tireless and passionate dedication to wild salmon and the communities who depend on them. He drove countless miles and hours to meetings across BC, championed the Upper Fraser runs, and showed up again and again for his people, the land, the water, and the fish. To many of us Thomas was a mentor and true friend.

Thomas believed in the capacity of First Nations to lead — in stewardship, innovative approaches to management, and rebuilding salmon for the benefit of all people and all living things. He leaves behind a legacy built not just in fisheries, but in people. In his own words, he knew "we still have a long way to go", but he also saw the way forward: "we will continue to work together as Upper Fraser First Nations to rebuild salmon and sustain our fisheries and our communities for future generations."

We hold his family, community, and loved ones close in our hearts and send them our deepest condolences. We grieve this tremendous loss to our organization and the broader fisheries world. We also celebrate the extraordinary legacy Thomas leaves behind in the work he championed, the people he lifted up, and the teachings he shared. We will carry his spirit forward in everything we do.

UFFCA and UNBC co-delivered a highly successful community water monitoring workshop on April 30 and May 1, 2026, bringing together researchers and technical staff from First Nations organizations, provincial and municipal governments, and UNBC, for two days of peer-to-peer learning and hands-on field training. The 60 participants included reps from 11 First Nation organizations, highlighting the collective expertise, leadership and collaborative relationships of Upper Fraser First Nations.

See upperfraser.ca/work/habitat/water-quality-and-quantity-monitoring/ to learn more about the 15+ year running Nechako/Upper Fraser Aquatic Habitat Monitoring program.

Thanks to all participants for working with us to build lasting community-led water stewardship capacity across BC!
