We had over 25 people reach out to sign up, and we are so pleased to see the level of interest in sign language classes. We had our first class yesterday evening, and it was filled with a wonderful group of engaged students.

People with disabilities often face higher costs of living, and the DTC can help individuals and families access important financial benefits, including additional income supports.

Join us to learn more about the DTC, associated benefits, and practical steps for navigating the application process. This session is open to people with disabilities, family members, caregivers, service providers, and anyone interested in learning more!

Last week, Whitehorse joined communities across Canada in lighting up for disability-inclusive employment! 💜

On October 15, buildings and landmarks across the country were illuminated in purple and blue as part of Light It Up! for National Disability Employment Awareness Month (NDEAM), a nationwide campaign raising awareness about the importance of inclusive workplaces and recognizing the skills, talents, and contributions of people experiencing disability.

October is Disability Employment Awareness Month (DEAM), a time to celebrate the contributions of people experiencing disability in the workforce while drawing attention to the barriers that many still face in accessing meaningful employment. DEAM is also an opportunity to encourage employers and communities to take action toward creating more accessible and inclusive workplaces.

A huge thank you to all the locations around Whitehorse that participated in Light It Up! this year! We're grateful to see our community taking part in this national campaign and helping shine a light on disability-inclusive employment.

Last month, MentorAbility participant John had the opportunity to explore what goes on behind the scenes at Air North through a mentorship at the Whitehorse airport!

John spent time shadowing customer service agents at the check-in counter, learning how luggage is processed and transported to aircraft, and getting an up-close look at planes on the runway. He even had the opportunity to learn about how luggage is loaded onto a Boeing 737!

Throughout the mentorship, John asked lots of questions and learned about the different roles involved in keeping airport operations running smoothly. The experience also helped him explore his employment interests and identify other opportunities he’d like to learn more about.

A big thank you to Katja, Joe, and the Air North team for welcoming John, sharing their knowledge, and making this mentorship possible!

💼 Have you heard about MentorAbility?

MentorAbility is a national initiative that provides short-term mentorship opportunities for people experiencing disabilities to explore different careers, build connections, and gain firsthand experience in workplaces that interest them.

Our community mural is complete, and we're so excited to share it with you!

Over the past several months, our office has been transformed into a colourful celebration of community, creativity, and belonging. Designed and facilitated by local artist Hakim Regine, this mural was shaped by ideas shared by our community and brought to life with the help of many hands.

A huge thank you to Love2Thrift, Whitehorse Community Thrift Store for making this project possible through their Sharing Our Success Fund. Thank you to Hakim for their care and creativity in designing and painting this mural. And thank you to everyone in our community who shared their ideas, time, and creativity to help bring it to life.

Read more about the mural, the inspiration behind its design, and the community effort to together in our latest blog post, "Bringing Our Community Mural to Life."

October is Disability Employment Awareness Month (DEAM)! 🎉

Throughout October, we join organizations and communities across Canada in celebrating the contributions of people experiencing disability in our workplaces and raising awareness about the importance of inclusive and accessible employment.

Meaningful employment provides opportunities for people to contribute their skills, build connections, and participate fully in their communities. This month is also a chance to reflect on the barriers that continue to limit access to employment and the work needed to create more equitable and inclusive workplaces.

💬 What does workplace inclusion mean to you? We'd love to hear your thoughts in the comments!

🗓️ Join us on October 15th as we celebrate DEAM and 10 years of Mallory's Postering! We look forward to bringing our community together to recognize the importance of inclusive employment and celebrate this exciting milestone. Check out our event page for more details!

🧡 Last week, we gathered at Inclusion Yukon for our Orange Shirt Beading Workshop in recognition of Every Child Matters and the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation.

A big thank you to everyone who joined us, and especially to Nita Clarke for facilitating the evening and sharing her knowledge and creativity with us. Nita brought a variety of accessible beading options for participants to choose from, including mittens, small shirts, shoes, and orange T-shirts, making it possible for people to participate in different ways.

Tomorrow, September 30, is the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation and Orange Shirt Day. Community members are invited to join the Council of Yukon First Nations and Yukon First Nations Education Directorate for the Healing Walk and Community Gathering. The walk begins at 10:50 AM at the Totem Pole at Front and Main.

We encourage everyone who is able to join tomorrow’s gathering and take part in this important day of remembrance and reflection.
