Bill No. 6 was introduced at the Yukon Legislative Assembly today and represents a positive move for workers. Currently, Yukon Wildland Firefighters do not have the same presumptive cancer coverage as Yukon Structural Firefighters. The proposed amendments to the Workers’ Safety and Compensation Act would expand presumptive coverage for Wildland Firefighters to include the same cancer classifications as Structural Firefighters, achieving parity.

We have come this far thanks to the dedication and advocacy of members of the Yukon Employees' Union. We want to express our special thanks to Alex Macphail, President of YEU Local Y034 and a Wildland Firefighter, for advocating on behalf of his colleagues during the past wildfire seasons. We want to thank Jim Regimbal, former President of the Association of Yukon Fire Chiefs, for his advocacy on behalf of our members.

We also thank the Whitehorse Fire Fighters Association IAFF Local 2217 for supporting expanded presumptive cancer coverage for YEU members and for their ongoing commitment to making firefighting safer for all. Our members appreciate the work you do! We know the sacrifices that structural firefighters make each day, and we also stand with you in support of improved working conditions.

Wildfires are becoming more intense with climate change, and the interface between forest fire and urban environments is also increasing. Firefighters are the ones on the front lines dealing with these changing conditions. Although this new Bill is a step in the right direction, the fight to further improve working conditions for firefighters of all backgrounds continues.

On September 30th, we mark the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation.

Here in the Yukon, the legacy of residential schools is not distant history. Children were taken from their families and communities to residential schools and residences across the territory: Chooutla in Carcross; the Whitehorse Baptist Mission; Yukon Hall and Coudert Hall in Whitehorse; St. Paul's Hostel in Dawson; and Shingle Point on the Arctic coast. Many Yukon children were also sent to Lower Post, just across the B.C. border. Survivors, their families, and their descendants are our neighbours, our friends, and our fellow Union Members.

The Yukon Employees' Union (YEU) recognizes that we live and work on the traditional territories of the Yukon's 14 First Nations. We also recognize that the Labour movement must play a meaningful role in advancing reconciliation.

For YEU, reconciliation is not only something we ask of governments. It is work we must do ourselves. That means listening to Indigenous members, learning from them, and acting on what we hear. It means making our union a place where Indigenous members are respected, represented, and heard, at the bargaining table, in our workplaces, and in our own leadership.

YEU reaffirms its support for the 94 Calls to Action of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada. More than a decade after the Commission released them, much of that work remains unfinished.

We encourage members to wear orange and take time to learn and reflect. And we ask everyone to carry that commitment beyond one day.

Every child matters.

From Chooutla in Carcross to St. Paul's Hostel in Dawson, residential schools and residences operated across the Yukon for more than 80 years. Survivors and their families are part of every community in this territory. On September 30th and always, YEU stands with them.
