Congratulations to our Yukon Learn 2026 Learner and Volunteer of the Year award winners.

Ali Hassan Adam Issa - Learner of the Year Winner.
When Ali Hassan Adam Issa first came to Yukon Learn Society as a refugee, he had very limited English language skills and faced the challenge of adapting to life in a new country. Despite these obstacles, Ali approached learning with determination, courage, and an unwavering commitment to improving his English language skills.

Through consistent effort and perseverance, Ali has made remarkable progress in English. He attends tutoring sessions and ESL classes with enthusiasm and actively seeks opportunities to practice and strengthen his language skills.

Ali’s dedication has helped him secure full-time employment in the construction industry, which is why he is unable to join us today. This accomplishment reflects his strong work ethic, resilience, and commitment to building a new life in Canada.

Ali’s perseverance and positive attitude have been an inspiration to those around him. His journey reflects the power of lifelong learning and the impact that dedication and hard work can have in overcoming challenges. Ali is an outstanding example of resilience, growth, and commitment to building a brighter future.

Judy Harwood Dabbs - Volunteer of the Year Winner.
Judy Harwood Dabbs has made an incredible impact as a volunteer English as a Second Language tutor, going above and beyond to support her learners. Since joining Yukon Learn, she has dedicated countless hours to helping newcomers improve their English, build confidence, and feel at home in the Yukon.

Judy's support doesn't stop when the lesson ends. She has helped learners navigate life in Canada, connected them with community resources, and been a constant source of encouragement along the way. Thanks to her dedication, her learners have achieved excellent results on their CELPIP exams, creating new opportunities for work, education, and permanent residency.

Judy's kindness and commitment have not gone unnoticed. She was also the runner-up for the City of Whitehorse's Volunteer of the Year Award, recognizing the difference she makes in our community.

We are incredibly grateful for everything she does and are proud to recognize Judy for her outstanding commitment to lifelong learning, community, and volunteerism in Whitehorse.

This is a conversational language exchange for participants who can converse in both English and Spanish and want to practice, improve fluency, and connect with others in a relaxed and friendly setting.

32nd PGI 2026 is in the books... and what a tournament it was!
Another year, another incredible day of golf, laughs, mini games, prizes, sunshine, and a whole lot of support for literacy in the Yukon.

To everyone who golfed, volunteered, sponsored, donated, bid in the auction, bought 50/50 tickets, or simply helped spread the word: thank you. Because of you, Yukon Learn can continue providing important free literacy and employment programs across the territory.

A big thank you to the Yukon Rendezvous Can Can Line for coming out and being part of PGI day.

They brought a lot of excitement throughout the day and helped add to the fun in all the right ways. Bringing energy, smiles, and a whole lot of high kicks wherever they go, the Can-Can Line has become a true crowd favourite and a proud part of PGI!

It was great having them with us, and we really appreciate them taking the time to be part of the event.

Huge thank you to the City of Whitehorse, Yukon FireSmart team, for coming out and being part of PGI day.

Not only did they spend time connecting with golfers and sharing important FireSmart information, but they also brought along Ember the FireSmart Fox… who, based on comments throughout the day, may have unintentionally launched a new debate about whether or not Ember is actually Pikachu.

For the record: fox. Definitely fox.
