McMan Youth Family & Community Services North Central Serving the areas of Westlock, Barrhead, Alexis, Whitecourt, Edson and Hinton. The opening of the group home was perhaps to some a seemingly ordinary event.

On November 15, 1975 four graduates of Grant MacEwan College opened a group home in the inner city of Edmonton. But these were no ordinary people and this was to be no ordinary group home. Our founders knew and accepted that there were young people who needed to be cared for outside of their own families, but they questioned and challenged the existing norms and practices of how that care was prov

ided. Not only did they believe that things should be different, they believed that things could be different. And so, they made them different. The young people in the home were cared for within the context of supportive and understanding relationships and all practices were based upon the values of giving, trust, security and acceptance. Within the group home a family and home-like environment was created, the individual interests of the young people were fostered, visits with family were encouraged and supported, and vacations and trips were common and frequent occurrences. For the young people the group home was not a placement. Nor was it just a place to live. It was a real home; a safe and caring place in which each of them was given equal opportunity, not to become equal, but to become different – to realize whatever unique potential of body, mind and spirit they possessed. And so, McMan had begun…

General information

The North Central Region offers services in the communities of Hinton, Edson, Whitecourt, Barrhead, Alexis and Westlock. Program Supports include: - Family Preservation and Family Group Conferencing as referred by Child and Family Services - Safe Visitation- referrals accepted via agency or self referral. 780-778-3290 The Family Intervention Program is a community-based service offering a range of supports to families and youth. Our services are guided by: • Active participation of individuals, families and their support networks in the change process. • Provision of flexible service based on individual needs. • Services delivered within the individual’s home, community and support network. Family Support provides children, youth, and families with the supports and skills they require to function effectively in their home, family, and community. These services reduce the risk of an out of home placement and promote the timely reunification of families. We provide services to address a multitude of complex family issues; family of origin issues, addictions, parent-teen conflicts, communication skills, mental health, parenting issues, child development, behavior management, and skills development. Youth Work provides a unique experience to engage youth and assist them with issues such as: addiction, social skills, accessing community resources, school issues, problem solving and conflict resolution. Safe Visitation- supports continued contact through visitation between children and non-custodial parents where there have been incidents of domestic violence. Since opening its first program in 1975 McMan Youth, Family and Community Services Association has grown and evolved into a dynamic not-for-profit social service agency that provides a comprehensive range of programs throughout Alberta. McMan is a well-respected organization and has earned a solid reputation as a responsive, highly competent and innovative partner in service delivery. McMan is made up of people who truly care - from our local boards of directors to our professional staff and our volunteers.
