FoSBS is now well into spring 2026 activities with the invasive green crab trapping methods training last week & the exciting capture of a gravid female. Twenty volunteers collected 50 lbs of litter at Blackie Spit on April 19th and the 3rd work party of 2026 at the White Rock Native Plant demonstration garden showed us spring flowering is happening and will be fabulous in the next few weeks. For those who live near White Rock, please do visit the garden and let us know if you enjoy it.

Friends of Semiahmoo Bay Society (FoSBS) thanks the and the White Rock Surrey Naturalists for their ongoing work with us to clean out the 60 nest boxes at the Serpentine Wildlife Management Area.

FoSBS was asked by the province to conduct this annual cleanup of the tree swallow and wood duck nest boxes in 2005. With the birds arriving sooner each year, the volunteers must face possibly inclement weather, such as snow, blizzard, heavy rain etc but this past Saturday morning was glorious sunshine and warm with the birds singing their appreciation!

Note the challenges accessing the boxes in deep water in the photos!

Friends is already active with spring activities and welcomes community volunteers to participate in the monthly native plant garden, scheduled shoreline cleanups and green crab trapping.

🌿🐦 Our school programs are back! 🐚🌊
FoSBS has officially relaunched our three hands-on, nature-filled school programs: Birds in Focus, Beach Hero Marine, and Wetland / Pond Discovery!
To spark curiosity before the adventure begins, classrooms receive a resource kit—packed with books, posters, and guides—two weeks ahead of their field trip, led by passionate local naturalists 🌱📚
Because connecting our community to nature matters, programs are by donation (suggested $3–$5 per child), and always free where cost is a barrier 💚
