"As voters start to turn to who they are going to support for the upcoming federal election, B.C.’s chief coroner is hoping the ongoing overdose crisis weighs into the minds of voters.

In a wide-ranging interview for Focus BC, Lisa Lapointe said she would like to see the federal party leaders focus on plans to cut down on illicit drug deaths and to provide wide-ranging support for illicit drug users.

“I wish the federal leaders would come to B.C. and speak to some of the people I have spoken to,” Lapointe said."

"Aeris Kurtis Finch lay unconscious, his skin looking blue, in his Mission, B.C., apartment.

Co***ne laced with fentanyl led to an overdose. The then 31-year-old suffered seizures, swelling of the brain and organ failures, including in his lungs and kidneys.

Paramedics worked on him for nearly 25 minutes to get his heart beating again, he says. Then he was placed in a medically induced coma for 23 days. "

As overdose deaths in B.C. reach new highs, an overdose survivor from Mission, B.C., encourages those struggling with addiction to get support before it's too late.

"The numbers are now painfully clear: last year, as the country rallied to save lives during the pandemic, toxic street drugs wiped out Canadians at a record pace, with fentanyl, a powerful synthetic opioid, leading the carnage. All told, confirmed or suspected drug poisonings killed nearly 7,000 Canadians in 2020, or 19 people every day"

From July 11 to July 17, 2020, drug poisoning killed at least 207 Canadians, according to data compiled by Maclean's. That's more than 29 people a day, for seven straight days.

Check out each party's platform for how they would propose to address the increasingly deadly impact of the toxic drug supply. Now is our opportunity to tell Canada how we can Turn the Tide on overdose!

Over 22,000 Canadians have died of a drug overdose since 2016. Here's the Liberal, Conservative, and NDP plans to tackle the crisis.

"In 2015, Vancouver mom Deb Bailey spent Christmas Eve in the morgue.

It's where she identified the body of her 21-year-old daughter, Ola, who had left home to go holiday shopping just two days earlier.

"There she was, laying there in the clothes she had left in, looking like she was sleeping — and you're shattered, really," Bailey recalled.

Ola is among the more than 7,000 British Columbians who have died from illicit drugs during B.C.'s overdose crisis, which was declared a public health emergency in 2016."

Advocates have long been calling for access to a safer drug supply for users in B.C. as more and more toxic drugs flood the streets. Last year was the deadliest on record, with more than 1,700 people fatally overdosing.
