WS Butterflyway Project Volunteer Rangers help create butterflyways in the community, by creating various garden projects, sharing knowledge at local events & online.

Helping pollinators by getting more native plants in the ground. Welcome to the Whitchurch-Stouffville chapter. The David Suzuki Butterflyway project began in 2017 with a simple aim:

To inspire people to plant native wildflowers throughout their communities. This project is a volunteer led movement bringing nature home to neighbourhoods

Our business cards arrived today they look beautiful. The black-and-white one is to use for a craft at events for the children to colour. Then in the spring, we’re going to tape on seed tapes on the back so people can take them off and plant them in the ground. Then the cards can be used as a bookmark so people will always have access to the QR code which goes to our website.

I did the design on my cricut machine using the butterfly designed and coloured for us by Ledge Eisen, the author/ illustrator of beautiful adult colouring books.

It’s a good time of year to start checking your property for

the Monarch Killer, known as

Dog Strangling Vine!

You’ll see these seed pods now, and even more further along.

Cut them down to the ground,

And put them IN THE GARBAGE!

Not leaf bags, not the green bin.

Garbage!

Do not pull these vines by the roots.

You won’t get the root system this way,

And each broken root makes 10 more vines.

Reminder.

Monarchs ONLY host plant to ovipost (lay eggs) is Milkweed, any variety.

However because DSV is related to the DogBane family, which Milkweed is apart of, it tricks them for reasons unknown, to ovipost on it. The baby cats hatch, and cannot eat the DSV and die.

I’ve witnessed a Monarch ovipost on DSV, (I took those eggs and hatched them to Milkweed) so it happens!

We need to be good stewards in our ecosystem.

Planting Native is a great full step,

But removing invasive plants is the other side of that!

Join us for our last event of the summer.

September 2nd brings us our final Ice Cream Pop Up of 2026. We’ve had a great season with Mister Treats Soft Serve & all of our amazing guests. We are excited to be joined by the always awesome folks from WS Butterflyway Project.

Pop by the Ninth Line Arena & say hello, 7:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.

Before reaching for the spray bottle, consider what's already working in your garden. Dragonflies are quietly managing mosquitoes. Ladybugs are feeding on aphids. Spiders are catching flies. Nature's already built the system—it just needs space to operate.

A healthy garden isn't sterile. It's alive and balanced, full of creatures doing their part in an ecosystem that's been perfecting itself for centuries. When we step back and observe instead of react, we realize we're not fighting nature. We're part of it.

Spray less. Watch more. Let the garden remind you that sometimes the best solutions are the ones that were already there.
