Join us TOMORROW for the DDSA Musical Theatre Performance 🎭🎶

In partnership with The Travelling Stage, we are proud to present a talented cast of DDSA members for an exciting Musical Theatre Performance. Many of our Youth Night members will be performing!

Join the audience for an hour of singing, dancing and drama to many classic Disney songs. Our performers have been rehearsing since October and are ready to entertain the whole family. There are two performances this Saturday May 9th at 11:00am and 3:00pm.

Your presence supports our mission of awareness, inclusion, and acceptance - on stage and in the audience. Celebrate the talents of individuals with Down syndrome and the wider Durham community. This event will bring families, friends, and supporters together in a welcoming space where every performer is valued and included.

The DDSA is now accepting applications for the Izzy Salangsang Sibling Scholarship 💛🎓💙

We are awarding two $500 scholarships to recognize the vital role of siblings in our community. Izzy’s spirit continues to inspire us, and we are honoured to support siblings as they pursue their post-secondary goals.

Who is eligible?

- Students currently enrolled in a college or university program
- Has a sibling with Down syndrome

We’re so excited to share that SWOT Soccer League is hosting a charity tournament in support of DDSA 💛⚽💙

📍 Victoria Fields, Whitby
📅 Monday, May 18, 2026 (Victoria Day)
🕘 9am - 3pm

They have invited our community out to enjoy the tournament, and the day, as they support and celebrate us! There will be skills & drills stations set up for spectators to participate in, a bake sale, raffle prizes, 50/50 draws, and more!

Let’s show up strong for our families and celebrate inclusion, connection, community, and - of course - cheer these amazing women on as they play the game they love, for the people we love! 💛💙

As we wrap up Black History Month, I reflect not only as President of the Durham Down Syndrome Association — but as Desiree’s mom.

Being a Black family in the Down Syndrome community carries layers. We navigate disability. We navigate race. And sometimes, we navigate spaces where we don’t always see ourselves reflected.

But here is what I know:

You are not alone.

Our journeys may not look the same — but togetherness means making space for all of them.

To every Black family raising a child with Down syndrome — your story matters. Your voice matters. Your presence strengthens this community.

At the DDSA, we are committed to building a space where everyone feels seen.

There are exciting things coming soon from the DDSA❕💙💛❕

With World Down Syndrome Day just over a month away, we want to ask you to SAVE THE DATE for something new and exciting this year, taking place on Saturday, March 21st!

More details in the very near future, but this will be an evening event (starting early enough for the littles, and going late enough for the partiers), and there will be food, drinks, dancing, and more!

Thank you to everyone who came out to our Family Swim Day! 💙 It was so nice to get together as a community and share some splashes, some laughs, and of course - some pizza! 🍕
