We are all travelling together on this journey — Wi’la’mola
Last November, our team took part in Indigenous Sport, Physical Activity & Recreation Council (I-SPARC)) Indigenous Cultural Safety (ICS) course, an opportunity to listen, learn and reflect on Indigenous history, colonization, reconciliation and Indigenous participation in sport.
Shelley Milstein, our Director of Philanthropy, reflects on the experience:
“I would encourage anyone working in sport, who is looking to deepen their understanding of Indigenous history, colonization and reconciliation to explore I·SPARC’s Indigenous Cultural Safety course. Our team found the experience extraordinarily valuable and moving. It challenged us to listen, learn and reflect, while deepening our understanding of Indigenous participation in sport and the many Indigenous-led sports and competitions that exist across Canada.
Whistler Adaptive Sports Program, we believe that sport should be a place where everyone has the opportunity to participate, connect and belong. Continuing to learn about the experiences, histories and perspectives of Indigenous peoples is an important part of that work. This course gave our team an opportunity to reflect on how we can continue to create a more welcoming, respectful and inclusive sport community.”
For organizations working in sport and recreation, I·SPARC’s Indigenous Cultural Safety course offers an opportunity to learn, reflect and consider how we can contribute to more welcoming, respectful and inclusive sport communities.
Learning is part of the journey.
